ROCK: Emo, WORLD: Reggae
Kite are from Barbados in the Caribbean, so their guitar-based sound is the last thing you'd expect. Rock music is very much an alien genre in the islands genre but Kite use it to express life from an island point of view - giving the songs a unique camera-angle and feel.
Kite gets its name from a popular piece of Barbadian culture, the Kite, which fill the island's skies every Easter, yet the band is unique, as no-one else in the Caribbean writes, or sounds, anything like them.
Kite was officially formed in 2003 by Brian Marshall & JJ Poulter and the band has been getting gradually increasing airplay on Caribbean radio stations with songs such as 'Shine', 'Radiate' and 'Nice To Finally Meet You'.
Further afield, these songs received a thumbs up in the form of an honourable mention in the Billboard World Songwriting Contest in 2003. Encouraged, Kite finished writing their debut album 'Up In The Air' in early 2004 and they released it independently in August 2004, and have been playing to packed houses, and receiving constant rotation on radio, in their island paradise home of Barbados ever since.
'Up In The Air' gave Kite the opportunity to work with top Caribbean producer Jeremy Harding (Sean Paul producer/manager, on 'Nice To Finally Meet You'), a development that is seeing producers in the region realising the international future of bands working outside of the 'traditional' genres in the Caribbean. The album also saw the use of steel pan and 'vintage' Reggae guitar sounds, unique to Kite in this more contemporary, 'emo' Rock genre.
Kite headlined Culture Shock, the Caribbean's premier international pop/rock festival on the beach in Bridgetown, Barbados (March 19th, 2005). This year featured bands from the U.S.A., Canada, The U.K., Trinidad & Tobago and Barbados. They also returned in May 2005 from the Florida Music Festival where they were the only band from outside North America selected to showcase.
On September 30th 2005, Kite's song 'Firefly' was featured on US television - CBS' series 'The Ghost Whisperer'.
Kite's universal sound, and their Caribbean origin, make them a curious oddity (commodity?). Their goal is to show just how much their sound has become a universal currency ...
