ROCK: Surf Rock, ROCK: Grunge
Having toured 32 countries, the Melbourne-born, Stockholm-based singer-songwriter is back in Oz show-casing her second independent album Precious Junk . The critically acclaimed CD was recorded in Sweden last year and launched here in early April.
The first single Catalina Dreaming started roaring across southern airwaves in January. While an album track, Fannie Bay, has been scoring airplay in the Top End, the second official single is Superhero, a playful celebration of classic '60s TV shows. The lyrics for all three were written by Darwin author Andrew McMillan.
"I met Kitto when she was gigging in Darwin a couple of years ago," the former rock journalist says, "and was impressed, and sometimes unnerved, by her energy on-stage and off. References to classic '60s television characters kept popping up in her conversations, so when she invited me to pen some lyrics, one of the first I presented was the Superhero. It's a tongue-in-cheek celebration of sixties pop culture, a black & white age when kids all over the country were leaping off the garage roof with a superhero's cape trailing behind."
Since her last Darwin show a year ago, when she was touring on the back of Bus Driver and I Wonder Why from her debut Princess of Tragedy, Kitto has carried her growing swag of observations and experiences around the European festival circuit. She's supported the eclectic Jacque Higgins in Theatre De Verdun at the Nice Jazz Festival in France, shared the bill with Megadeath at the Midtfyn Festival in Denmark and, in September, became the first Aussie to rock the boards in the ex-Soviet country of Belarus.
"It was an amazing eye opener," she said. "I got a glimpse into a country which is still battling the throes of post-communism, still in its transitional stages. Most folks have hardly got a dollar on them as wages are so low, so consequently the show was full of young journalists who got in for free, vying for a story and a chance to express their views and pitch questions to someone from the west."
Weeks later, she turned on a series of hot shows at a base at the North Pole. "It's everyone's greatest dream to actually go somewhere as extreme as the North Pole," she says. "For me it was about as Everest or as Dick Smith as I'll ever get." Kitto and her rock trio flew North 72 degrees to Svalbard for 3 gigs before an enthusiastic crowd of 1000.
Upon returning to her current base in Sweden, Kitto completed Precious Junk, tracing lines between indie-fused rock and grunge.
Kitto's first overseas experience was in the mid-nineties when she spent eighteen months gigging around LA, the city of Pay to Play. "One night," she recalls, "when the booking agent was hosting the bill at The Roxy, all the acts had to bring in ex-amount of payers through the door before we got paid. I remember really well known acts were playing on the same night and so I had a nominal amount of payers. Just as my turn came to go up on stage, the agent pointed to me and says, 'You, up stairs.' I hadn't pulled enough paying punters. I stood, stunned, when a movie producer drew $500 dollars out of his pocket, stuffed it in the agent's hand and said, 'She's up next!' That's LA in all its glory for you!"
Since then, her independent spirit has taken her around the globe on an 'extended working holiday' that's seen her strutting her stuff in 32 countries.
Some people say that she sounds like Janis Joplin and some say Courtney Love other can't place her, They only all agree to is that they got strucked by a great feeling with depth.
