A bit of background on the recording of "Every Season of My Soul"...
A few years ago, after I led worship at a conference in Atlanta, a perfect stranger, Dushi Sherard, offered me $2,000 to help me get started on recording a cd. Until that moment, I had never considered recording. After his generous offer, I thought I should at least ask God about it...and I was amazed at the idea He came rushing in with! In a span of about 15 minutes, in the middle of the night, God began to remind me of all the seasons we had been through together and how He is teaching me to worship Him through each of these unique times... how He is teaching me to encounter His strength through the weaknesses I find in myself and sing to Him out of the truth of what I am wrestling with as well as the truth of who I find Him to be to me in these seasons. God then began to show me how each of the past seasons I''ve been through correlate with the birth of each of our four daughters, Promise Joy, Justice Hope, Grace Victoria,and Glory Ruth. I also saw how each season was reflected in a specific time of day as well as a time in the human lifespan. Here''s how He showed it to me...
Winter is midnight, the darkest hour of the night. It''s the time of clinging to promises and finding joy in that place of stillness and intimacy. In terms of a lifetime, it would be conception...the secluded miracle of life bursting forth when only God can see. It''s the moment when the most profound things are happening and you usually have no idea! From the outside you appear like a tree in the winter when all is dead and dormant above ground, but deep down roots are very active. You are searching for proof that your life matters and the fruit of a life that has destiny. The biggest need we have in those seasons of winter is to truly let God in...to allow yourself to be still and not get ahead of Him...to allow Him to teach you true intimacy until He impregnates you with His will and plans, which are so much better than ours! The potential danger, especially in winter, is to get complacent and numb and live in survival mode...or turn to other comforts and addictions. This is a time to choose to wait for Him, knowing that He is worth waiting for and trust Him because He does not disappoint! If we really embrace this season of midnight, we can experience Him in depths we never knew possible and end up not even caring if we ever find some grand purpose because we find it''s enough just to be with HIM! When you move out of that winter season, you will have learned a little more of how to wait, how to be held by Him, and how to encounter Him as the Life Giver.
Spring is dawn, when light and perspective is just on the horizon. It''s about the time when you find you''re definitely "pregnant" with something from God, but you have no idea how to birth it! In a human lifespan, spring is best depicted as the birthing process and specifically the birthing of the things you hope for justice to be seen in. It seems to me that usually the areas we experience the most injustice personally in, are the very areas He raises us up to become conduits for His justice. Justice is when things are in right standing with God. That longing we feel for justice is from Him and as His bride matures, she births the very answers to that cry for justice on the earth. Like any natural birth, there is a weariness that can set in, but that is when the most focus and "push" is required. You feel strangely alone, but you need help and cannot do it alone. You learn that it''s ok to be vulnerable and out of control and eventually surrender to the pain of it, knowing that He will complete what He initiated. In spring seasons, there is tremendous potential to walk in the revelation that Christ in me is the hope of glory. He created you to birth things that are bigger than you!
Summer is the noon day sun, and all the heat that comes with it. There are no shadows to hide in...you are fully seen with all your wrinkles and imperfections, and if you are honest, you aren''t sure you have what it takes to truly shine like you feel you were meant to. This season is seen in a lifespan as that time you tend what you have birthed (which sometimes you regret even birthing!). In summer you find victory in God''s grace- His power that enables us when we have none of our own. It is appropriate to question Him in these moments, asking if the things you are spending your life energy on are things He initiated and desires for you to pour yourself into. The heat of this season tests to see what is of eternal value and what will burn away. Ultimately He gives grace to us for those things that He knows are worth our time. If we are unable to access this grace, we must let those things fall away. It is also a time when we learn to not allow even the good things that He is blessing to steal the intimacy of the love it was originally conceived in...we learn to prioritize the relationship that all else should be an overflow of. Summer, as crazy busy as it can be, can also be a time of steal away moments with the Lover of Your Soul.
Fall is sunset and, in the Hebraic calendar which God initiated, it is the start of a new day. It is the letting go of what you have birthed and raised up, in order to see the glory of a better day. This season is seen in those moments in life when His glory is displayed in us and through us because we have learned to let go when we have been faithful to our part. Our daughter, Glory Ruth, is named after Ruth in the story in the Bible where she met Boaz as she harvested wheat in his field. An expression of true intimacy is seen as he covered her with his cloak as she lay at his feet, symbolizing his commitment to redeem her. Fall is the beauty of death...dying to our own potential and glory so that His may be seen. Of course Jesus did this with perfection as He gave up all that a human man has the rights to, in order to allow God our Father to show His glory in redeeming us and all of creation back to Himself. On an individual level, the fall glory is when we come back to the Source of our desire for destiny and purpose...when we realize that He is what we really wanted from the beginning. Those things He allows us to do and be have their value in the fact that they brought us full circle, right back into the original craving! As it relates to us corporately, the fall season is wrapped up in the grand finale of the book of Revelation in the Bible. All that God promises to those who overcome and the descriptions we find of Jesus are surely the ultimate glory. There is a glory of God that will be seen in the end time harvest and every personal "harvest" until then is but a glimpse of the harvest dance of Jesus and His bride!
This is certainly not meant to be a doctrine, but rather something that rang true to me as I processed my relationship to God with Him. Nothing in life is neat and tidy and ever summed up as distinctly as I have described it. In fact, I see seasons and cycles as overlapping, interrelated, and sometimes different in several areas of our lives. For instance, in your marriage you can be in a certain season, but in your career another, etc. I do suspect though, that we all have an overriding season that we are in at any given moment in life in general, especially in our relationship to God. When He gave me the idea to make a cd with four long songs reflecting the four seasons, it felt like the most natural thing for me. I long to give Him worship that is honest and relevant to our present relationship and I loved the idea that I might be able to help others do the same.
"Every Season of My Soul" was recorded in my home with the band I always worship with at our church. No, I don''t have a recording studio...we simply set up all over the whole downstairs area of my home...me in the library/music room, Austin McDonald on drums in the living room, Brandon Weaver on bass in in the entry way, Rachel Krause on keys in the hallway, Jon Murphy on acoustic guitar in the dining room, and Al Greene on electric guitar in the kitchen (amp in the bathroom!). We recorded over 3 days. Each day I wrote the lyrics and then asked the band to pick a chord progression and we went with it. I am always amazed with the creativity they flow in as they worship, truly led by the Spirit, because I don''t have a clue how to lead them! Then Brandon took the recordings back to the place where he puts his "magic" on them, Iron Wing Studios. And am I ever grateful for that "magic"! (Thank you to each of you for walking this path with me...what a journey!)
