In less than two years, Massy Ferguson has earned a name for itself locally and internationally. They have played memorable shows in front of packed venues in their hometown of Seattle, WA, entertained U.S. troops in Germany and played alongside members of Phish and the Grateful Dead in Jaco, Costa Rica.
Massy Ferguson represents a fresh take on traditional American roots music. Tracing their influences to alt-country (Drive-By-Truckers, The Jayhawks) and American southern rock (The Black Crowes, Marshall Tucker Band), the band has put together an impressive list of songs and shows, keeping true to old musical pioneers while forging their own path.
Over this time span, their 5-song, self-released, self-titled EP has garnered attention locally with KEXP Radio (Live Room performance, Aug. 2007), 103.7FM The Mountain, and Disheveled Magazine (May 2006). Internationally, they have received airplay with Radio Golden Flash (Belgium) and Inner FM 96.5 (Melbourne, AUS). In August of 2007, they released Live in the Lounge, a live album featuring 8-songs from their 2006 Insomnia Radio acoustic session, which was podcast to an audience of nearly 80,000 subscribers to Insomnia Radio.
Massy Ferguson is entrenched in the Seattle roots music scene, playing alongside acts such as The Dusty 45s, North Twin, West Valley Highway, The Souvenirs and Jeff Fielder at key venues such as The Tractor Tavern, Chop Suey and The High Dive. They are also connected with local legends Phil and Tim Hanselroth (Brandi Carlisle), Mike McCreedy (Pearl Jam) and Shawn Smith (Brad; Satchel).
In January of 2008, the band played "Seattleâs Got a Boner," a Replacements tribute night and benefit for musician Kim Warnick at The Comet Tavern featuring Scott Kannberg of Pavement, Love Battery, Andrew McKeag (The Presidents of the United States), Mark Pickerel (Screaming Trees) and The Tripwires.
Massy Ferguson is cultivating an international following as well. This past August and September (2007), Massy Ferguson toured Northern Europe, playing shows in The Netherlands (Amsterdam) and Germany (Munich, Wiesbaden), among others. On Sept. 6, they played a pre-deployment event in front of thousands at Wiesbaden Army Airfield for the United States First Armored Tank Division (1AD).
The band has also experienced success in Latin America. In 2008, Massy Ferguson played alongside Mike Gordon (Phish), Bill Kruetzmann (Grateful Dead) at an open air benefit concert at Doce Lunas in Playa Jaco, Costa Rica. A year prior, MF toured in the country and were featured in the article "Mar y Musica" in the national Costa Rican newspaper La Nacion previewing their show at the Villa Caletas Amphitheater. Upon finishing a 90 minute set to a jam-packed, sun-drenched amphitheater, they were overwhelmed with screams of "Otra" (meaning "encore" in Spanish).
Massy Ferguson is also known as "The Peopleâs Band," "The Hardest Sweating Band in Showbiz" and of course, "Massy F***ing Ferguson." These monikers seem fitting for the bandâs blue-collar approach to writing music and for their rowdy live performances. The four-piece embraces the reputation, the adulation, the screaming fans ... who wouldnât?
Born as a side project of two established Seattle bands, Fragile Jack and Vast Capital, Massy Ferguson made a name for itself early by recording the 5-song EP with local producer Geoff Ott at London Bridge Studios (Pearl Jam, Blind Melon). The result is a warm recording of songs that can be described, as one magazine put it, "unapologetic rock americana for the masses."
Locally, their songs have received radio play, including "Bent," numerous times on 90.3 KEXP; the band has also performed live in the KEXP studio for the Audioasis program. And "Take Down the Company" was recently featured on 103.7 The Mountain with DJ Drew Dundon.
Consisting of Ethan Anderson, vocals/bass, Adam Monda, guitar/vocals, Tony Mann, keyboards and Dave Goedde, drums, Massy Ferguson is a four-piece band of accomplished musicians. In the mid-â90s, Goedde and Monda showcased in front of label representatives in Los Angeles and had their song "Ground Speed" featured in a Polo Jeans commercial. Anderson co-wrote the song "Real As it Feels" which was a finalist in the 2005 USA Songwriting Competition and has shared the stage with the likes of Heart, Spin Doctors and Pearl Jam. Keyboard player Mann most recently lived and performed in Costa Rica for four years after spending a number of years in Seattle with the band Bigfoot Zoo.
