John Kreinces is the lay cantor at Congregation B’nai Zion in Key West,Florida .
This recording utilizes traditional melodies gleaned from his childhood in Brooklyn as well as new adaptations of various folk melodies which he has adapted to the service.
His cantorial singing is accompanied by a choir of up to ten additional voices, ranging
from basso profundo to soprano, with all of the voices being his, new parts and harmonies added over each track one at a time.
The result is a full, rich powerful and spiritually moving work which encompasses all of the main portions of the Rosh Hashanah service, including the sounding of the shofar.
This is a recording which is unique in its style. It avoids cantorial virtuosity in favor of driving, rhythmical, singable melodies which one wants to listen to over and over.
You won’t have to be Jewish to love this CD.
