Want to hear some great new, original blues tunes? Try Dave MacKenzle. Dave is a singer, musician, song writer from Nashville who continues to turn out some great original blues songs. Unfortunately, it''s the same old music business story. He''s ignored by the press and record labels, so he keeps puttin'' them out himself. His latest CD, Slender Man Blues, has caught the ear of all 5 blues DJs at KNON and is getting more airplay than just about anyone else these days. His tunes are full of wry, smart-ass humor and great guitar, harp, and even mandolin. Music this entertaining is not available in stores, but it is available directly from the website will get you this CD with 12 original songs with titles like "I Don''t Like Little Kids", "King of the Blues (I Ain''t Even Tryin)", "Pay Your Own Way" (what Dave tells his dates!", and the "Honeymoon Mambo." This guy is destined for bigger things.
Dave MacKenzie has been a professional musician since the age of 13.
"What I''ve always been interested in is writing my own songs. It didn''t matter whether I was in rock ''n'' roll bands or blues bands or playing in country bars, I''ve always tried to sneak a couple of my own tunes in there. When I first started off playing at military bases in Europe as part of a touring review, I played songs I''d written because, at the audition, that''s what got me the gig; so I figured, even then, maybe I was on to something."
At various times Dave has also worked as a studio musician, staff songwriter, musical director and bandleader, film composer, radio & t.v. jingle producer, gag writer and guitar instructor, in addition to conducting a college-level lecture series on the history of pre-WW2 blues recordings.
His songs have since been recorded by David Bromberg, Jackal, Katy Moffat, David Soul, Maria Muldaur, Edwin & Tremaine Hawkins and James Armstrong, among others. Dave also appears as a special guest on the Jeff Foxworthy album, "Crank It Up", playing guitar and singing on "Let Me Drive", a song he helped co-write.
With 25 years of experience touring nationally, Dave has appeared in most of the major venues in the US. His festival credits include Chicagofest, Kerrville, St. Louis Blues and Heritage festival, Spiritfest (KC), MerleFest and Winfield.
Since starting his own label, Hey Baby! Records, in 1993, Dave has released 2 CDs, "Rats in my Bedroom" and "all new Slender Man Blues", both of which have received rave reviews from the musical press in the US and in Europe, as well as nominations two years running for Nashville Music Awards in the "Best Blues Album" category. Selections from both CDs have appeared on compilations issued in Switzerland, Holland, Belgium and Germany.
His latest project, "Old, New, Borrowed and Blue", is his first ever all acoustic effort and was released in December 99 on the Dutch blues label, Black & Tan Records. In April 2000 Dave will begin his 6th European concert tour, with dates scheduled (so far) in Switzerland, Belgium and Holland.
"Mostly what I do is try to entertain people, that''s why my songs tend to come out on the funny side. I play a lot of blues and I try to have it be "real" blues (whatever that means) but if we''re not all having fun, what''s the point? The lesson I learned from playing in bands with people like Hank Ballard and Sam Moore and from warming up shows and getting to meet Muddy and B.B. and all those guys is that blues players should never expect to get rich, but if you do it right you can have a pretty good time."
