Now here''s some history....

Mark was born in Kansas City, Missouri and raised in a musical family where the earliest influences were his mother''s guitar and mandolin playing. Having begun learning the mandolin around age 10, a year or so later he developed an intense interest in the guitar. Like his mother, he learned to play "by ear" and also learned to sing. Unlike his mother, whose interests were centered on traditional American folk, country, and bluegrass, he was fascinated with the modern folk, rock, and pop of the ''60s and ''70s. However all the styles made an indelible impression on him.

Cultivating and developing his talent in numerous bands through high school and later as a professional touring musician, most notably with an acoustic duo known as "M.C. & DeFeis" and a variety dance band named "Legacy", he was exposed to and influenced by the many different genres of music embodied in the cover material he performed. Although he had felt compelled to write songs from the very beginning, his experience grew and he discovered that writing was, for him, the most expressive and satisfying. He has explored and taught himself all the instruments he utilizes in his recordings but songwriting truly remains his primary passion.

Many years later, having steadily worked towards his vision and relocated to the Minneapolis/St. Paul area in 1999, Mark has accomplished a portion of his dreams by starting his own label, Io Music Ltd., and building a private studio where he writes, records, and produces his music. His newest album, "In The Moment", is an autobiographical collection of songs that highlight the distinctive point of view and style of this continually maturing singer/songwriter. It''s an album worth listening to.

WHAT THIS ALBUM IS ABOUT: Feeling music with some guts and emotion in the center and some sugar on top. Kinda along the lines of Marc Cohn, Josh Groban, Dan Fogelberg, Harry Chapin, Neil Diamond and James Taylor to name a few. But that''s just what I''ve been told. It''s a little hard to be objective seeing how it''s me that writes the stuff. That part''s up to you. I''d rather write it and feel it than analyze it. Like Elac Morfo Pock. (and what does THAT mean in Klingon?) Read on.......

A new music genre: Elac Morfo Pock.......

In order to best describe the music written and performed by Mark Cullen, one may need to invent new words not found in the english (or any other) language. What immediately comes to mind is, naturally, Elac Morfo Pock. Roughly translated this would be ''ELectric / ACoustic Middle-Of-the-Road FOlk, Pop, rOCK''. But it is a rough translation and fails to do justice, not only to the written works, but to the ultimate sound of Mark Cullen. So let''s just leave it at Elac Morfo Pock. Enough on the new genre...
Let me focus on the talent exhibited here. First, this new album is in it''s entirety, the product of one man alone. No electronic gimmicks were used to produce the sounds of the instruments. He plays them all, with a little help of multi-track recording which, in my opinion, does not diminish his talent in the least. Then there is Mark''s vocal work. With the exception of two tracks, the vocals are all his and I find his voice to have an honest and soothing quality found in the multitude of great singers from Frank Sinatra to James Taylor. But to make comparisons does not do justice to the sound Mark creates. In the end, you be the judge...

OK Mom,
Yeah, I do owe practically all of what I am, musically and otherwise, to you and Dad. It was you that gave me the musical genes that have brought me to where I am. After I started learning mandolin, remember the deal you made me? If I could learn a minimum of three chords on that old 1946 Wards arch-top acoustic guitar of yours, you and Dad would let me take the money out of the savings account I received when I was born ( a whopping $80 but the only money I ever made for just "showing up") to buy an electric guitar and amp. What motivation! And when I had finally mastered those chords on an instrument with a sadly warped neck and strings the size of bridge cables, it happened! The old used Fender Musicmaster guitar and Melody amp was the stuff dreams are made of.
And then came the first bands. And being a country player yourself, I can hardly imagine the amount of patience and love it took for you and Dad to drive me around to gigs, haul our equipment, and listen to us play rock (which we all knew you and Dad hated), chaperone us to all those "bad" places where there was drinking and who knows what else was going on, and in general provide all the support without which we wouldn''t have been able to do anything.
And then came the years after I left home and struck out on my own with first, "M.C. and DeFeis" (our answer to Loggins & Messina,Seals & Crofts, etc.-duos were hot then) and then "Legacy" where we saw the road for what it truly was. A lot of fun moments here and there interspersed with hours of either acute boredom or misery or both. And I knew you guys were worried all the while.
And so here I am today, using that "ear" for music I inherited from you, Mom. Playing instruments, singing, writing, and doing things I never dreamed of. You did an excellent job-both of you.
And I think I''m gonna be OK now......
