Karen D was raised in a musical family, learning to sing and play piano at a very young age. As she grew, she accepted Christ into her life and became heavily involved in music at school and church. She began to teach herself guitar and sing in worship bands. These musical experiences increased her desire to serve, leading her to go on several missions trips, both at home and abroad, during her high school years. It was through these experiences that she felt God calling her to a lifelong commitment of ministry.
In the following years, she pursued a degree in music education at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. During her college career, she participated in worship teams and gospel choirs. It was also at this time Karen began her song writing career. In 2003, she received a Bachelor in Music Education with a major in piano and voice. Even after this achievement, Karen continued to feel God calling her to a life devoted completely to ministry.
After graduating college, Karen began working at a church in the Southern New Jersey area, and quickly became involved in music ministry. She was given the opportunity, for the first time, to lead worship in the young adult/college ministry. Through these weekly worship sessions, Karen came to understand the true joy in leading others to musical worship of our God. During the past 4 years, she has continued to lead worship at other local churches and ministries, while still pursuing opportunities in the local community to perform, compose, and record.
Karen recently recorded her first EP with Nashville based producer Tim Holt. To his credit, Tim Holt has also done work for Rebecca St. James, Krystal Meyers, Fort Minor, and Elese, just to name a few. The EP recording is set to release late this Fall.
In pursuing a singer/songwriter career, Karen D’s voice and style have been compared to Jennifer Knapp, Joni Mitchell, and Corinne Bailey Rae. Comments describing her singing/ song-writing have been, “beautiful voice’”, “love the words”, and “the lyrics [on this song] are awesome and carries a message that I think would touch a lot of people.”
One close friend, co-worship team member, and music lover said this, “Her lyrics are not that of just another pop song, they come from a much deeper place in her being and are a shared gift to us from she and God.”
