Kati Penn began her music career at the age of 12. Born and raised in Lexington, KY, she started singing and playing fiddle with local bands until being chosen as the fiddle player and lead singer for The Young Acoustic All-Stars. This was a band put together by Pete Wernick, president of the International Bluegrass Music Association. Shortly after Kati joined this band, they made a CD which was titled, "Somewhere Down the Road". Kati toured coast to coast with this band of musicians, whose ages ranged from 12-17 (Kati being the youngest and the only girl). They performed on the nationally televised show Prime Time Country on The Nashville Network (TNN), they performed for one summer at the Opryland Theme Park and they also performed at the SPBGMA (Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music) awards show. During her time in The Young Acoustic All-Stars, Kati also entered and won many fiddle competitions including the Indiana State Junior Fiddle Competition.
Kati next played with the New Coon Creek Girls, an all girl band from Renfro Valley, KY. Kati played all across the country with these girls and was featured regularly on the well-known Renfro Valley Barn Dance. While playing with the NCCG Kati also played the Grand Ole'' Opry, Fan Fair in Nashville, TN, and she got to present an award at the International Bluegrass Music Associations Awards Show. After her time with the NCCG Kati began working with Pam Gadd, a founding member and lead singer of the critically acclaimed national touring group Wild Rose. During this time Kati traveled to perform with Pam in Zurich, Switzerland. After playing with so many bluegrass acts, Kati decided to venture into country music and began playing with country singer and songwriter Len Doolin. Kati was able to travel the country with Len and play at Fan Fair once again. She also got to be in Len''s music video titled "Breaking What''s Left of My Heart, which is played on Great American Country (GAC).
Kati''s list of accomplishments is many and varied. She played fiddle on Scott Vestal''s solo CD ,"Millenia", and she sang harmony with John Cowan on "Bluegrass 2001", a CD-series produced by Scott Vestal for Pinecastle Records, which was nominated for The Best Instrumental Album award by the IBMA . She has also played and sung with Bill Anderson and J.D. Crowe. Kati has opened for the likes of: John Michael Montgomery, Montgomery Gentry, Tammy Cochran, Earl Thomas Conley, Ricky Skaggs, George Jones, Kitty Wells, Tony Rice, Mark Chestnut, Tracy Lawrence, Joe Diffie, Ricky Skaggs, Chris Cagle, Trick Pony, and Darryl Worley. Kati has toured for 7 years and has performed on over 20 CD''s. She completed her last three years of high school while on the road in pursuit of her career in music and received her diploma at the age of sixteen. Kati also studied voice with Renee Grant-Williams for approximately one year.
At the age of 21, Kati is currently playing fiddle and singing with local bluegrass, country, and rock bands .She plays and sings in recording sessions and teaches fiddle lessons as much as time permits. Kati has a new CD entitled "Crazy or Not", a vocal debut album that reflects her bluegrass and country musical background. This CD has just been released on December.9, 2003 to a sold out crowd at The Phoenix Ballroom in Lexington, Kentucky.
