-------- ABOUT Nick Blue -------------------
Considered by some as ''poetic art songs'' and straight pop and country by others, Nick Blue is one sound born of true originality. Nick Blue, the primary singer/songwriter of the band, was born in Kentucky, lived in Paris and Alexandria and eventually settled in Seattle. The diverse elements of his background are reflected in music that doesn''t stop delivering surprises until the show is over. With a backlogged compilation of over 200 songs, just when you tink you have heard all there is of Nick Blue, a new gem jumps out of the case. From a personality itself that is generous and larger than life come songs that are like in nature, inviting the participation, creative input and exploration of other musicians. A true listener will hear in this music not a static product, but a field of possibilities, both an inner and outer journey. Here are contained the universal elements that have made art ''art'' for millenia; an appeal across boundaries to those things which dwell within each of us: passion, humor, love of a good story, sorrow, joy and a love of beauty we may have otherwise forgotten we possess.
-------- ABOUT THE CD "It''s Just a CD." ----------------
What is it about an album of music that makes it good? You like it and that''s it; perhaps it moves you in a special way, you identify with the stories in the lyrics, you can''t quite put your finger on what it is perhaps, but you know it has ''it.''
For many listeners, "It''s just a CD" has got ''it.''
Twelve cuts comprise the band''s indie debut CD. Here''s a narrative of each of the songs in the order they fall on the CD.
''Paris Nights'' is about love on the streets of Paris, France. Reminiscences, ghosts calling us back to the past to see what we''ve lost by moving on; not fulfilling our dreams; letting everyday life take center stage in our existence. It is dark but illuminating, powerful yet gentle.
This Old Guitar
Take a light moment to see that what goes around comes around and sometimes stays for dinner. It''s an easy, uplifting tune after the orchestral experience of ''Paris Nights.''
Dancing in the Stars
''Dancing in the Stars'' is thought to be Nick''s best. It''s a love song that is about being in love with life; perhaps not telling the difference between your love and life itself.
The story of the Preacher''s wife is when we take even a little walk off that narrow stretch of highway called ''the right thing'' we can get into a load of trouble. Nick Blue calls it ''countryfried pop.'' "It''s an especially fun tune to sing, in the style of Johnny Cash, especially when everyone sings out ''Lordy momma, that was the preacher''s wife!" Doing wrong is almost always an uncommon pleasure; getting caught, an unpleasant surprise...
''Promises'' takes the same theme of infidelity into the melancholic shadows of loss; the unending attempt to fill the shattered void left by broken love. Sometimes love seems futile; other times it is.
There is an answer to the question posed in the previous song, ''Promises.'' It''s that there''s something out there larger than us, waiting patiently for us the get a clue. Unfortunately, it''s almost always, almost just in time that we make this discovery. And just when we figure it all out, it''s too late, or is it?
Sweetn Luv Thang
Let''s have some fun with a sweet babe. That''s all to be said for the torture of watching the beauties of the world dancing around us, bringing about the insanity of admiration for the contours of the female form.
A splash of water in the face after ''Sweetn Luv Thang,'' it''s back to countryfried pop, a country party song. It''s simple but brings out a lot of tapping feet where there were none before.
Love in the Rain
Nick Blue writes and sings love songs. This one is about intimacy, the fear of taking the first step and what happens when you do.
Looking like Vangogh
Is all creative success really just the byproduct of a really good love affair? Inspiration seems always just around the bend from ones we love. Why is that?
Beyond Your Gate
This is a song written to memorialize the 911 Disaster and what is lost or gained by the tragedies of our time.
It''s Just a CD
In the end, for our band, it''s about when you appreciate us by contributing money for a piece of us in return. It is the thrill of any performer or composer, or artist to gain this kind of respect. It means the music matters; it ought not to mean this, but it does. It also pays for gas, food, shelter, and lottery tickets...
