Details:
The spirit of music made itself manifest in Nike Greye before she could talk. By the age of three, she was harmonizing enthusiastically with her mother, as she would hum classical melodies in the kitchen while cooking. Nika''s mother, Mary Ellen Myers, was an artist and avid music lover, well versed in many vernaculars from classical to folk, and she passed a wealth of culture to Nika''s young, eager mind.
By the second grade, Nika was also showing exciting promise as a writer, exhibiting a singular imagination and insight with her clever short stories and beautiful, poignant poems. But it was her music that would win the hearts of her teachers, and in third grade she was spotlighted as a solo vocalist in a school production. She sang beautifully, and from that moment Nika knew that she was going to be a singer. Nika''s attentions were focused on many varieties of music, but it was gospel that spoke to her heart and filled her soul with the inspiration so evident in her singing today.
Nika utilized her poetic skills for writing songs, turning some of her poems into lyrics that would later emerge as hit-single material. She was quickly noticed by the industry moguls, and one of her songs, "Far From Home" was chosen as the only original song recorded on the China Beach theme album. She started a band called Naked Muse, but soon realized that there was a sound yet to be realized and that for her to find it, she must search alone. She parted ways with her band members and began her quest for a sound that would be her own.
Soon she was introduced Manual Stagars, and he exposed her to a subculture of dance and celebratory music not yet popular in the public arena. The electronic sounds and hypnotic rhythms of underground trance spoke to Nika in much the same way gospel had so many years earlier. After composing a song with Manual it was clear to her that this was the direction she wanted to explore. A year later "Awakening" was born. Grammy winner Max Quayle would remix "Only Love", lending his unique perspective on dance rhythm and creating an alternative vantage point from which to consider Nika''s compelling harmonies. The song made the Top Ten chart on multiple DJ listings.
Currently Nika is finishing an acoustic album, so that her listeners can get a feel of the roots from where the rhythms sprung forth. This project is one that highlights the delicate beauty of Nika''s unique voice and haunting delivery of such a yearning, fragile harmony.
After the acoustic project is completed, Nika plans to work with award winning guitarist and progressive DJ Rook Overman, whose complex interpretation of rhythm and electronic sound dovetails with the silky smooth voice of Nika Greye in a way that allows for a deeper exploration of the endless vista of sounds we call music.
