JAZZ: Jazz Fusion, JAZZ: Smooth Jazz
Nishmah, formerly ebbnflo, is a jazz fusion band, blending the individual talents of each member to create a unique sound. Our music is progressive Jazz Fusion with an easy listen-ability. We went down to the basics of drums, guitar, bass and sax to get smooth grooves with a touch of New Orleans soul.
Each song has it's own unique sound. While the title track, ebbnflo, is all acoustic, we experimented with some Celtic sounds on hills of dublin. swing sweet benson has a more classic jazz sound while habla con el viento is pure feeling and raw emotion put to music.
Here is a brief bio of each of our members.
Jose Pimentel - Bass
I am from Panama City, Panama. There I was influenced at an early age by the music of Ruben Blades. As a teenager, I became interested in Rush, Kansas, and Lynyrd Skynyrd I played the drums throughout middle and high school.
When I came to the states in 1985, I put more emphasis on the bass and began listening to Getty Lee, Mike Vinas (Bass player for Ruben Blades) Leon Wilkerson (Bass player for Lynyrd Skynyrd), John Pattatuci, and Stanley Clark. As I got older, I became more interested in jazz music of all kinds. I began studying with Bill Huntington in 2003.
Playing with Nishmah allows me the freedom to explore different grooves, experiment with various sounds and rhythms, and put to use all of my musical experiences through the years.
Katie Pimentel - Alto/Soprano Saxophones
I was born and raised in New Orleans, LA. Being from New Orleans has definitely influenced my music. When I entered the fifth grade, I had two choices, I could take art classes, or I could join the band. My entire family is musically inclined, so my only real choice was which instrument I wanted to play. I thought that the sax was a cool looking instrument, so I decided to play the saxophone.
I played all throughout middle and high school. I was always in the jazz bands and combo groups that were formed for the annual concerts, and loved performing at the variety shows. And of course, growing up in New Orleans, I marched in Mardi Gras parades every year.
When I was 18, I began playing at a local Blue's club on Bourbon Street. It was a Blue's club by night and an Outreach ministry to the homeless by day, run by a local church. It is here where I met Jose - he was the bass player. We became best friends, and eventually married in 1998.
We have played together ever since at various venues and our local church. Playing with Nishmah has given me the opportunity to go back to my musical roots, while at the same time, explore new genres of music. I am continually challenged to become not just a better saxophone player, but also a better musician overall.
Steve Cherrier - Drums
My drumming career began at around 7 years old. I learned mostly by watching/listening to my older brother, Tom, play along with his favorite music, which, in turn, became my favorite music. Because one drum set was the limit in our household, I would have to hone my skills on Tom's kit, which was a challenge because Tom was most reluctant to let me play his set. Common sense took a back seat to the desire to play his drums, and I always received my due penalty when he caught me on them (some well-placed brotherly swats).
This process continued for the next 10-11 years until at the age of 18 I enlisted in the Air Force. It was while serving in Germany that I was finally able to buy my first drumset. I joined an already established band, Ground Zero, and we played mostly AF base clubs and some German festivals (translated: how much beer and bratwurst can one consume).
I was discharged in 1987 and the following years included travel and much soul searching. In 1992, I met a beautiful woman by the name of Joyce, who would become my very best friend, and eventually, my wife. There wasn't too much drum activity during this time. In fact, I didn't start playing seriously until around 1993. This is when I gave my life to Christ and began to serve musically in the church.
Fast-forward to 2004 and Nishmah. I am amazingly blessed to be surrounded by some very talented musicians by the likes of Katie, Jose, and Billy. I am very excited to see how God is going to use us and the music to touch precious lives.
Richard Ellis - Guitar
I've always been more a fan of Music than a musician. Music, for me, has always been more a form of meditation through practice. I never really aspired to be a performer or even make money at it, quite the opposite actually. What drew me to play guitar initially were the sounds I heard from Jimi Hendrix, not the songs so much as the ambient sounds he created.
Later what I found to be enjoyable was how learning the instrument catered to my introversion. I could be in a room by myself and work to improve at something. I was always too shy to actually play for people and to this day most of my friends either don't know I play or know and have never heard me play.
Being such a fan of the ever-changing spectrum of music it's really hard to say, "my influences are..." when I've been influenced by everything I've seen, heard, watched... you get the point. I mean I wouldn't be playing at all probably if my heart wasn't broken at the age of 19 or so. So, I guess that's a pretty major influence.
To this day I still listen to tons of music from all walks of the musical world and pull something from each thing I hear, and I still practice in the sanctity of my little bedroom and study as much music as I can in an attempt to add to my trick-bag of ideas.
Lately I've been very interested in sharing some of the musical knowledge I've acquired through the years. So guitar lessons are available for those who have interest by emailing me at: [email protected]://www.tradebit.com also leave comments or questions you may have, all are welcome...let's talk shop.
