Southwestern urban fantasy

14 MP3 Songs
COUNTRY: Western, FOLK: Modern Folk

Details:
brekekekex koax koax... Nancy Louise Freeman hits her stride with her second outing, Logick, a collection of tales set primarily in the American Southwest. A grand cast of Phoenix musicians join her for this musically varied album for which Jim Foley of KCXI-FM dubbed her ''The desert''s answer to the Beat Generation''.

"The concept behind Logick had its beginnings in a song off my first album, Lullaby in Red, where I played with desert imagery in the world of a child''s imagination. Logick takes that and builds it up on a grand scale. It seemed to me that the urban southwest needed a new mythology, something that reflected the paradox of a city plopped down in the middle of a desert. Life in Phoenix has this essentially absurd quality - so why shouldn''t we believe that there''s a mystical white jackalope controlling our water supply? Or that geckos bring us presents in the morning?"

In order to address her subject, Nan added C&W, gospel, and pop-rock to her already-impressive range of styles. "It''s all about creating the right setting for the lyrics, for the story. The backing musicians - there were about 20, I think - did a great job of pulling each song into contrast to give it its own character. The Overland Stage and The Broken Goddess have been covered since then by several musicians in the Valley, and Goddess has become a favorite sing-along - or frog-along - at local science fiction conventions."
