Imagine Coldplay's soaring electric guitar and solemn mood, Remy Zero's eclectic pop experimentation, Ben Folds' hook driven piano, and the Dave Matthews Band's acoustic undertones and rhythms and you come very close to nailing No Second Troy.

"[T]he group has been successful in creating a distinct sound. . . No Second Troy is something of a rarity as a cohesive unit of gifted soloists who know how to share the spotlight. No Second Troy came together through friends in 2003. Guitarist Tom McCarthy: "I was looking for a group that was willing to push rock a little bit, not be afraid to play stuff that might seem a little out of bounds, and build on some of the music that I love." It didn't take many practices with Shanker, McGee, and Beach to know that things were happening. Pianist Mike Beach: "We had enough in common - we all had played in jazz groups, and liked a lot of the same rock bands - but not too much, so it felt like we were building something new." The Washington City Paper music classifieds then lent a hand. Singer Jeff Wharen, returning from three years in Korea, showed up for practice one night with a beat up guitar case covered with stickers from around the world. McCarthy: "At the end of the night, I said to Jeff, 'This could be something good.'" With Wharen's versatile voice offering shades of Rob Thomas and Adam Duritz as it flowed from strong to more atmospheric, and supported by the subtle harmonies of McCarthy and Beach, the sound came together instrumentally around the piano, acoustic guitar, bass and drums, with electric guitar, organ, keys, and other strange sounds filling in spaces and providing layers. Wharen: "It was luck to run into these guys. Ultimately, what makes it worth it is people who just like hanging out together musically and otherwise."

In a short time, No Second Troy has gained a loyal and expanding following, performing for crowds at various venues in the D.C. area, including Iota Club & Cafe, the Velvet Lounge, DC9, the Warehouse, the Grog & Tankard, Jammin' Java, Club Daedalus, Staccato, Continental Modern Pool Lounge, and Zig's, as well as for larger audiences at regional venues such as Starr Hill in Charlottesville, VA, the annual Fort Hunt Music Festival in Alexandria, VA, and the Funk Box in Baltimore, MD. No Second Troy was also selected to perform at the October 2004 3rd Annual Mid-Atlantic Music Conference in Charlotte, NC, the March 2005 OnTap SXSW Roadtrip in Austin, TX, the April 2005 Six Points festival in Arlington, VA, and the April 2005 Dewey Beach Popfest in Dewey Beach, DE.

The Debut CD from No Second Troy: Fall

**Nominated for Best "Debut Recording" -- 2004 Washington Area Music Awards (

"Their CD, Fall . . . speaks volumes -- smart music from smart guys . . . Lots of folks are talking about NST, too. Like XM Radio, which lists the band among the '12 most notable [unsigned] artists in the United States.' We must agree." --, January 2004(

No Second Troy recorded its debut CD "Fall" in the spring of 2004 at Bias Studios in Springfield, VA, the recording studio where the Dave Matthews Band mixed the platinum album "Remember Two Things" Mary Chapin Carpenter recorded a number of her Grammy-winning albums. Mike Fisher engineered the record, and mastering was done by Grammy award-winner Charlie Pilzer. Beginning with an evocative instrumental introduction leading into the resonating Hedge (chosen in October 2004 as a "Editor's Pick"), the CD ranges from guitar-based rock tunes such as Telephone, Last Best Thing, Tall Buildings, and Misbehaving to more atmospheric, piano-driven songs such as Teleology, Fall, Awaken, and Holding Pattern. However the music is categorized, Fall is pulled together by pulsing rhythms, ear-catching melodies, and lyrics that capture the search for ways to get past regret and break cycles.

Before Jeff Wharen arrived on the scene, the other members of No Second Troy collaborated with female singer Katie Goldberg in an acoustic rock effort known as Honeyflood.
