ROCK: Americana, ROCK: Classic Rock
In August 1986 Buffalo music entrepreneur Marshall Glover set up a show at the Old Main Inn in Fredonia, NY. On the bill were a pair of Buffalo bands: a rock quartet called the Riddlers (Adam Gearing, Tom Fischer, Jim Celeste, and Kevin McCue) and The Beatmongers, a pop trio led by Dave Meinzer. The 50 mile trip was an adventure, with Thruway construction, county fair traffic, and a thunderstorm - not to mention a flat tire - making the timely start of the show something of a miracle.
During the winter of 1998 singer/songwriter/guitarist Adam Gearing, recently returned to Buffalo from a decade of work, school, and travel, contacted his former band mate, bassist Tom Fischer. Tom had spent most of that decade working with drummer Jim Celeste in one of Buffalo's favorite bands the Pine Dogs. Adam, Tom, and Jim called longtime Buffalo performer, singer/songwriter/guitarist Dave Meinzer, and added him to their jam sessions. At Adam's suggestion, The Outlyers was adopted as the group's name.
The group spent most of '98 developing a repertoire - writing, rehearsing, and recording songs - and limited appearances to a
handful of shows. One of them was a November Gram Parsons Birthday Party at Buffalo's favorite roots-rock club, the Mohawk Place. In 1999 the band performed more often, including a set at the Americanarama festival in June. Full electric rock-n-roll shows as well as acoustic coffeehouses were included on their schedule.
That year also saw the addition of a pair of adjunct members - dubbed the "Adjunkies." Dave's wife, Cathy Carfagna, performed often with the band, adding accordion to most shows and full keyboards to selected dates. Yet another former Pine Dog, Jim Whitford, also showed up frequently with his pedal steel.
In 2000/01 Tom took a 10 month hiatus from the band because of a work assignment in Germany. Steam Donkey Frank Quebral filled in during that time. The song "The Journey is the Thing" was included on the Swedish release "Hit the Hay Volume 4" on Sound Asleep Records in 2001.
The Outlyers 1998 demo recordings were shelved in favor of new tracks and the 12-song American Songbook album (in the
works for two years) was released on May 1, 2002.
