Lisa Marie is wide awake.
After almost two decades in music, from Detroit to L.A. to Utah, from rap to Motown to pop to rock, and twelve years with her enormously successful band, the Co-Dependents, she’s decided to open her eyes and raise her voice on her first ever solo release, Awake.
She’s just debuted a four song EP, entitled Super Duper, in anticipation of the full-length album. The disc will be for sale at Lisa Marie’s upcoming dates on tour with Blessid Union of Souls.
The incredible musicianship and sweeping emotions of the four songs on Super Duper are just enough to whet listeners’ appetites and lead them to wonder where Lisa Marie has been all their lives. From the raw ache of loss, regret, and realization in “No More Time” to the playful groove of “Super Duper,” these songs are the work of a wise, soulful, passionate performer and songwriter working in the tradition of Melissa Etheridge and Leonard Cohen with the chops of Bruce Springsteen.
Lisa Marie is a musician’s musician, the kind of virtuosic player who can hold her own with the best of them in any style and on almost any instrument—she’s perfectly at home on guitar, bass, keyboard, and drums. But it’s her voice that haunts you long after you’ve heard it—equal parts Janis Joplin and Joni Mitchell, it’s capable of anything: sexy and sweet, gentle and raw, subtle and enormous. It is the kind of voice that seems almost divinely inspired and, once heard, is never forgotten.
Super Duper also features longtime Lisa Marie collaborators Brownwen Beecher (fiddle, backup vocals) and Mary Tebbs (guitar, backup vocals.) Beecher’s incendiary fiddling and Tebb’s eloquent guitar sound are the perfect complement to Lisa Marie, and the three women play together—both live and on disc—with all the texture, heft, and power of a much larger band. In addition to her responsibilities as a musician, Tebbs also produced the EP.
While Lisa Marie has never recorded her own work before, the four songs on Super Duper are clearly not the work of a nascent songwriter spreading her wings. Rather, the artist inside the cover-singer has emerged fully formed—confident, up to the challenges that await her and, finally, wide awake.
