The first time I heard Peter sing was in Eugene Oregon, in 1991. Pat Dodd introduced us - the three of us had long hair and an obsession with writing songs.
His songs were cheerful and intuitive. I was impressed and told him so. I said, "Peter, I hate to tell you this, but you''re a folksinger"
Pete replied, "Ya know, the thing about folk music is that...well...people really just don''t like it."
I have always admired Pete''s ability to employ nuances to construct his universe.
But, then one day, the nuances went on strike for higher wages. His universe began to collapse. Rivers abandoned their beds. The constellations engaged in a barroom brawl, and Heaven became a non-smoking area...
...Until Pete pulled out his guitar and said, "Hey, nuances, I''m a folksinger - ask Chandler. I can''t give you higher wages."
He started ramblin'' on about Woody Guthrie and the Dust Bowl ballads, the Great Depression, and saving your seeds. He began singing the soundtrack to a Steinbeck novel.
Hanging their heads, the nuances slowly returned to work. Heaven rescinded her dark clouds. The universe bloomed electric.
...green and yellow made my blue.
