The Smith Family Singers is made up of the fourth generation of musicians and singers in the Dennis/Smith family. Born in West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Rev. Leroy Smith and the late Musa Dennis Smith, a successful gospel musician herself for over forty years. The Smith Family Singers have been singing and playing throughout the tri-state area for over 30 years. Their uncle, John “Pickett” Dennis, played with some of the giants of the jazz industry before his early demise in 1963. He collaborated and recorded with Charlie Mingus, Max Roach and Thelonius Monk. This musical genius is now being displayed thru “Yes, We Can” the official Barack Obama Campaign Song.
Growing up in the Church of God In Christ all six of the siblings and now the nieces and nephews learned to sing and/or play. They have been essentially singing or playing most of their lives. Several years ago, the Smith Sisters were requested by the late Bud Ellison longtime producer for Patti Labelle to arrange, write and sing a gospel tune. They perform frequently at local venues in the Philadelphia area. The family’s creative and inspirational musical talent has been an uplifting experience for all.
