WORLD: Samba, LATIN: Flamenco
Phyllis Chapell performs a unique mix of originals, folk, jazz and international music, including songs in 11 languages from Brazil, Latin America, Europe, Israel, the Middle East, Africa, and the U.S. Her 3-octave vocals are supported and complemented by her acoustic guitar play, capturing the essence of musical styles from percussive Brazilian sambas and explosive flamenco rumbas to elegant classical arias, folk, jazz and original ballads.
Phyllis Chapell has performed in concert throughout the East Coast, the Midwest, and in Brazil and Switzerland. Her debut solo CD, "World Songs", was released in 1999. A song from that CD, "Soul in Flight" won 2nd place in a national song competition, Just Plain Folks, for best torch/cabaret song of 2001. She has been chosen to be included in a book about the top 500 jazz vocalists of all time written by Scott Yanow (writer for Down Beat, Jazz Times and AllMusicGuide), to be published in 2005.
She has released several CDs with her Contemporary World Jazz ensemble called SIORA (https://www.tradebit.com), which she co-leads with keyboardist/composer Dan Kleiman. Their new CD, called "Vis-a-Vis," was released in 2004. It is a journey in 7 languages of music from around the world expressed through the language of jazz. This CD has garnered a 4-star rating by https://www.tradebit.com and has been played on national jazz radio throughout the U.S., Europe, and Japan.
***** "Phyllis Chapell is an elegant singer who will steal your heart away if you let her. She accompanies herself on guitar, which she plays authoritatively...Her music is tasteful, eclectic and real. She eludes all labels!" The Philadelphia Inquirer
***** "It doesn't matter what language this woman sings in (and she sings in quite a few), it's captivating. Even when she scats, it's beautiful. The album is tender, intimate and shows off the wide range of not only Phyllis' voice, but her emotions and influences as well. Finely crafted work." Songwriter's Monthly
***** "The deep, rich voice of Ms. Chapell and the spritely work of her acoustic guitar bounces around the musical map to insure a captive audience."
