Details:
Charles Lane’s saxophone playing is a completely emotional experience. His progressive view on art compliments the way he writes, plays and understands music. Bending the rules of jazz by incorporating elements of the hip-hop, pop and jazz idioms, he views music as a forward thinking art-form that should be a reflection of the times, not what was, but what is and what will be.

Born and raised in the North suburbs of Chicago, IL., Charles is currently working towards his Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Performance at The University of Illinois Urbana/Champaign, where he is set to graduate in May of 2009. At the U of I he has studied with jazz greats, such as Professors Charles “Chip” McNeill, Teofilo “Tito” Carrillo, Jim Pugh and Dana Hall. Charles is currently on the Dean’s List and maintains a 3.6 cumulative Grade Point Average, in conjunction with his $2,000 Merit Based Music Scholarship and various other academic achievements. He was the youngest saxophone student to be selected for a small-group combo and the highest placed undergraduate saxophone player in the entire University of Illinois Urbana/Champaign Jazz program.

His performance record is something to be admired for such a young musician. In the summer of 2005, he was selected with eight other musicians from the Midwest to tour Spain and Portugal with the prestigious Midwest Young Artists jazz combo. Over a period of nineteen days, Charles played in every major city in Spain, including the Spanish-American Embassy, meeting and greeting the Spanish-American Ambassador. The group also made a stop in Lisbon, Portugal and played at the Portuguese-American Embassy for the Portuguese-American Ambassador. The following summer he was called upon, as a nineteen-year-old, to be a Teaching Assistant at the esteemed Birch Creek Summer Jazz Workshop in Egg Harbor, Wisconsin. There he taught lessons, and instructed the student trumpet section of one of the two big bands at the camp. Also, he was given the privilege to play in the Academy (or professional) band along side jazz greats such as Jeff Campbell, Rick Hayden, Reggie Thomas and Bob Chmel. His performances have not only spanned continents, but locally in Chicago and surrounding areas, at such well-known venues as Pete Miller’s, Hot House, Chicago’s Symphony Center and Grant and Millennium Parks respectively.

In the summer of 2008, Charles began writing the music for what would become his debut record, entitled "The Price Of Air". Including four originals out of the seven overall tunes, this record was embarkation on various modes and styles in the jazz idiom. Including elements of be-bop, modal jazz, hip-hop and free avant-garde music, "The Price Of Air" was released on October 9 to a great reception from the local Urbana/Champaign community. Few other musicians Charles’ age have taken on the responsibility of recording a full-length album so early in their musical careers, but Charles’ will and musical prowess have made this project something more than just a good effort from a college musician, but a musical force to be reckoned with.

As an artist, Charles is a firm believer that an appreciation and respect for the past is just as important as being a progressive and challenging musician. He constantly tries to develop ways to blend the past, present and future together in a synchronized fashion that simultaneously challenges the listener and speaks to them. For communication is the goal of all artists. That is where the true beauty lies.
