Pontus’ compositions are purely instrumental and mesmerizing like Jean Michel Jarre, with the electric guitar playing a critical role - creating layers, within dense layers of music and sounds (kind of like Pink Floyd) with the idea of creating a “wall of sound” to envelope the listener. Pontus’ own taste in music is wide ranging – heavy metal, instrumental, raw rock and roll, classical…and it’s clear in his style that he often borrows from each or all of these – making his music almost impossible to categorize. And, he doesn’t mind that.

The music has a mesmerizing quality – and to fully experience the intricacies of the layers and textures of his music, composer Pontus suggests headphones or an intimate setting where it’s just you and the music. He hopes that the music would carry you on a journey and would instigate a specific feeling – a feeling that words can’t describe. The “journey” to that point, is left to the imagination of the listener, Pontus doesn’t believe in holding your hand or twisting your arm, he just provides the music.

Pontus was born and raised in Sweden where he attended a rock school; he has a Masters degree in Music Technology from NYU. He has performed several live shows of his first CD “Great Wall of Music” in New York and Sweden. His shows involve a complete multimedia experience with visuals ranging from digital abstract designs to realistic images that are synched to his music, while he performs on the ever faithful guitar. Aside from making his own compositions, he’s also actively producing musicians in the area. His resume of sound design and music composition in the New York City independent film and documentary scene is ever growing (Wake, Behind Forgotten Eyes, Sonnets in the City, Racewalker to name a recent few). He is collaborating with his brother, artist Fredric Gunve in Sweden on the “Future of Art Project” (website). And, he also teaches at a ‘rock school’ for teenagers in New Jersey. He currently live and works out of his studio in Jersey City.


As the title of the album suggests – this music is about movements, motion, action, activity – my vision for this project was to create a specific feeling. I never want to leave you hanging on one thing – my ideas are to take you somewhere – but at the same time – don’t twist your arm. My first solo CD Great Wall of Sound was a collection of compositions from the last few years – a collection of ideas and musical thoughts that I had been composing for over 8 years (some of the melodic ideas there went back as far as beginning of 1997). With Movements my goal was to create a journey where each track flows into the other – everything is meant to shift and turn – and take you to an undetermined destination. But I am not directing you to one specific spot – rather give you (the listener) the tools and the fuel to start the voyage – where you choose to go is up to you.

I love to mix and match and borrow musical ideas from anywhere. I never set out to make a rock composition, or an Indian composition – but my goal is always to make you feel something or dream away to something. My music is often a fusion of sounds and instruments – electronic music, mixed with guitars, sound design and voices with melodies and percussion.

Hope you will take the journey with my music, enjoy the compositions – and below is a short write up on each track.

1.) WELCOME – I like the idea of a short introduction to an album, and this one is no exception. The start of this album is based on a Sound Design idea I have been working on – it reminds me a little of some form of abstract communication. An animal or alien language
2.) BLUE – This composition is based on an older piece, which was originally composed specifically for the guitar. I decided to incorporate more electronic elements and change the direction of the previously guitar driven track. The idea of the piece is a fast pace race – sort of like flying through a set of obstacles – maybe like a car game. It’s an adrenaline rush to make the listener ready for this album. The guitars highlight the melodic theme and accentuate the rhythm section, while the percussion set the tempo.

3.) BENGAL – this piece is inspired by the sitar lessons I took in India a few years ago. I decided to translate (loosely) some of the techniques I had acquired in India to the electric guitar. Compositionally I also thought of a good transition from the previous high energy piece into a mellower piece – which goes through phases, yet still maintain my idea of movement. I like the way strings are bent in Indian music – and love the use of phrases and melodic lines, and tried to imitate that in the piece.

4.) DON’ DO IT – originally based on a few vocal samples I had. The first version of this was based on three sounds – tearing paper, smacking paper, and a beer can – I edited these samples to create all the instruments, but decided to add more instruments to make it fuller. Also featured are vocal samples which has been stretched and mangled into a satisfactory result.

5.) FUNKIFIED – The most rock inspired composition on this album. The intro kicks in right of the top with distorted guitars, drums/bass. I even mixed some sharp knife samples. My idea of this track was a combination of funky guitars/drums, mixed with my idea of layered sounds. The second section has 5-6 guitar parts – flying across each other – developing themes – melodic hooks coming from everywhere. Sort of like my thought process – a little scattered. The middle really asked for a kickass solo – so I decided to throw one in. I love the idea of a developing solo – some flash, melody, and a solo that takes you somewhere – this solo has all that in mind.

6.) FLOAT – one of the later additions to my album. It is based on a feeling of floating. Key in this song is melodic structure and movement. Everything in this composition is supposed to take the listener to a destination of their own choice.

7.) RACE ACROSS INDIA – this track was inspired from my two journeys to India. I wanted to highlight the richness of India, and the complexities in its culture. I always wondered what it would feel like to fly 50 meters above Kolkata, Dehli, Bombay and look down at the volume of people in the cities to later fly across the amazing landscape of rural India. From the mountain peaks of Himalaya, to the costal areas of West Bengal, and to the beaches of Goa. This Piece is my tribute to a complex and rich culture that is so different from my heritage. I feel like this is basically how I musically would interpret my experience of India.

8.) MOVEMENT I - the concept is development through melodic structure and musical theme. I love developing melodic structures and adding. Its starts with a main melody that goes throughout – and develops from there – to build a rich and full sonic landscape. Again – a race towards a destination unknown – a travel through musical time. Like all my music – to fully appreciate it put on your headphones or sit in the middle of the room with your speaker evenly distributed on either side – close your eyes – and let go. Take the journey the music takes you on. Rise above the ground and release your body – fly away – for a moment don’t let the visual aspect of life dominate you – let your imagination be your guide. Who knows where you’ll end up. There are basically 2 segments of this song – one where you float – and one where you are running through a maze. Your muscles are tensed and you have to get through it – hooks are attached to your skin from all directions, pulling at you. At the moments you think you are about to get sucked back in – you are released and let go. Here you are free to roam – and float where you like. Finally we are back full circle – to the melodic theme of the beginning.

9.) DOWN STREAM – The basic idea of this composition was simple melodic and hooky music – which is progressing forward. Concept is simple. I wanted to create this with a very light feel in mind – my version of easy listening 

10.) DAYS AHEAD – This composition is a combination of two tracks that later became one for this CD. This track is very guitar based – it all started with a simple chord structure and developed from there. My idea here is melodic flow – and hooky guitars.

11.) INTERMISSION – just like in my first CD Great Wall of Sound I wanted to break the flow of the CD up into two sections. My idea of an intermission is to lighten up the flow of the music. Sometimes I write with a lot of focus and what I do need to be very precise. So I feel the need to lighten up my music, make it lighter, funnier, and happier I guess.

12.) TIME RUNNER – based on India music again – I heard this Bengali piece that I really liked and took some ideas from that. But this is perhaps more of a sound Design composition than anything. The structure is all about dynamic shift – I want the listener get an intense rush of energy and then let that release you into another dimension. This composition is also based on personal experiences and is a musical interpretation of a few vivid dreams I had.

13.) DRIFT – Based on a collection of guitar phrases and put together into a composition. Everything basically is set around a feeling of water and drifting away with the music.

14.) MOVEMENT II – A marriage of sound design and straight up guitar progressions. The concept is simple – a guitar line that develops and is combined with melodic structure. This composition is somewhat inspired by Jean Michelle Jarre’s Oxygen. I just love the sound of his synths and love his melodic structure. Everything else pretty much speaks for itself.
