MP3 Putois - The Thinking Fireplace
acoustic guitar with dreamy vocals, this will touch you forever , if not, you are not alive. Sounds like a cross between Cat Power if Chan Marshall was a dude and Smog after a couple of bottles of wine. Listen closely and you might hear your heart break

Putois is the name Bob Mason attaches to his music and its 1995 inception. The name derives from the short story of the same name written by Anatole France. After a frustrating time pursuing a writing career, Bob bought a cheap used Yamaha keyboard and, almost serendipitously as if the fates were aligned for him, won a broken 4-track recorder from a frump-faced efferent pool-shark and started experimenting with drones, noise and poetry. Bob locked away above his parent''s home in New York planted the acorn for his improvisational beginnings, which immediately sprouted. His first raw release of these recordings "Drunk, Insecure, Paranoid, Angry and Thinking Crazy Thoughts" is now out of print. Bob proceeded to build a vastly eclectic showing of experiments with "The Putois Intervals 1996 - 1998." During which he developed and harnessed his song writing abilities. In January of 98 Bob self-released limited copies of his first full length "Dancing in a Cave with the Universe" and passed them along to friends and other local musicians gaining somewhat of a cult following with fellow home-recorders and the NY underground experimental scene. In the meantime Bob played in several noise collectives around the NY area. Then in early 1999 Bob moved to Chicago and formed the band Qualifire. Bob would still record at home and in 2000 released "There Is a Heaven to be Found" to critical acclaim. With its mixture of ambient soundscapes and sullen almost tearful acoustic numbers Bob began to truly grow as a musician as well as a songwriter. In 2001 after a brief semi successful run, Qualifire broke up and now Putois is back with two new upcoming releases. "Putois, The Thinking Fireplace" is Bob''s all acoustic record and "Racecar Typewriter" which is a new collection of ambient experiments. Both are scheduled to be released Spring 2003. Bob has also collaborated with SomeOddPilot recording artists, Defender and the electro industrial outfit, Pointy Teeth (Divanation Records).

More recent news, Bob has completed a new record called "Scummer in the Summer" which has been called " a dark weird record" and described as a "combination of Brian Eno and Syd Barrett locked in a dimly lit room full of alcohol, narcotics, and cigarettes playing with keyboards and guitars" . There is no release date. Please contact Putois for more info .
