Holiday Feast Vol. 2 from Gastronomical Unit is the next Christmas present you get to open from this adventurous musical group. Ranging from the irreverent and raucous “Silent Night” to the serenity of “In The Bleak Midwinter,” Gastronomical Unit’s second CD takes you on another winter musical journey.
You might think someone’s redneck is showing in “Christmas Music Fun,” which offers a rare peek into the psyche and precision technique of a mastermind craftsman of holiday music.
You can visualize the introspective montage from a tearjerker film scored with “(Doesn’t Seem Like) Christmas Without You,” then bop along to an instrumental from the Future Music for Malls category, “Good King Wenceslas.”
You can revel in the punk-tainted guilty pleasure of “Silent Night,” after savoring the sweet and somber waltz of “What Child is This.”
Even more stocking stuffers await…
- “We Three Kings” is a live recording of an improvised groove on the classic theme
- “Toyland” reveals a distorted David Lynch-like industrial vision of Christmastime obsession
- “Noel Noel” proves that love lost can overshadow even our beloved winter holidays
- There’s beauty in simplicity in the acoustic “It Came Upon A Midnight Clear.”
ABOUT THE BAND
Gastronomical Unit is a macroorganism composed of an indeterminate number of living and largely organic beings, which only exists at random and brief periods in the space-time continuum. The organism continues to survive even when its members are severed and scattered across great distances. The natural habitat of the creature spans from the Great Lakes to the swamps of Florida, but it is most highly concentrated in the northeast region of the U.S.
The behavior of the hive is coordinated through the efforts of a Plastic Brain, enabled by long stretches of fibrous conductors, and fueled by stimulants no stronger than coffee. Reproduction of the macroorganism hinders its productivity. However, so long as one member of the collective remains, the music continues to be produced as a byproduct, suitable for attracting a mate.
Gastronomical Unit is carefully creating artifacts for future archeologists to uncover, but in the mean time, Holiday Feast Vol. 2 offers another musical treasure from recent history.
