Details:
I started the LunaCast broadcasts in 2001, original electronic music and a webcam that posted a frame every 30 seconds. Broadcasting high quality audio had only become affordable a couple years earlier. In the beginning we could handle 10 simultaneous listeners on the “borrowed” bandwidth my employer let me use. In 2001 I was using Propellerhead Rebirth software for most of the original music, along with vinyl spoken word and space music backing tracks and a Roland JP8000.

In early 2002, Brian Liston invited himself to a LunaCast and never left. I had started using Propellerhead Reason in 2001 (we love those crazy Swedes), and Brian uses a Virus TI (oh, and crazy Germans too). Almost all of the music is generated by Reason running on one Macintosh computer, but we add organic chaos by spinning spoken word and ambient pads behind the beats from Vinyl and CD. And, of course, there are ummm, one or two echoes, reverbs and oddities at B-Grade and Tinisi Hypermedia studios.

In 2005 we started playing in the VR universe of Second Life and I got a dedicated server with a professional hosting company. Now we can support many many streams and regularly play for 20 to 30 people at a time, all watching video streamed live from our studio, listening to high quality audio and dancing and chatting with us in SL.

Like all bands, we are waaaay to close to our own material to self produce. We needed outside help to separate the wheat from the chaff, and DJ Mike Carlson was just the man for the job. We started with the entire set of live recordings from the 2006 shows, about 17 hours of audio from five shows, probably 50-60 different songs. Over the deep cold winter of 2007, I walked over to Mike’s house once a week on Wednesday evenings with a beer in each pocket of my down parka and a manilla envelope with 17 CDs in it. We had lunch and settled down to listen, skipping though the CDs and taking notes until we got it down to 32 songs. Mike and I went through again and picked our favorite version of each. Needless to say, we want to heartily thank Mr. Carlson, this project would not be nearly so focused without his wise and tasteful input.

Brian and I took over the production and came up with an arrangement of 16 songs that fit on a CD, and 3 additional “club mixes” of various flavors. Brian, being the Pro Tools GOD that he is, was the obvious choice for engineer. He was way fast and so patient with Mike and my rapid fire questions and instructions as we sat on the couch and worked with him on the mix. Bri did a great job of wearing both hats, co-producing the project with me and input from Mike. From May through November, we worked on the mix at B-Grade studios almost every Thursday while his wife Laura played poker and the kids slept.

As my friend Gene said when I described this process to him, it’s like Gin. Super distilled essence of LunaCast...
