The Retrogrades, Brothers Ben and Alex Brewer, Thomas Abend, Jim Pearse and Marshall Frye, are an upstart alternative rock band from Boston Ma. Their debut CD Artificial People, blends contemporary influences and classic rock to create a surprisingly eclectic blend of indie rock. With songs ranging from 60''s soul (Time, Love and Tenderness), ambient-pop (stormy sea) and pure garage rock (Tea Spring). The Retrogrades have managed to create a sound that is both incredibly versatile yet still consistent. Alex Brewer''s soulful tenor croon glides smoothly over dark moody ballads like "The Troubles You Know" a song that starts off small with acoustic guitar and quiet piano and builds into an eruption of blues rock. "Glimpse" and "The One Who Knows" a pair of tuneful upbeat piano rockers, are reminiscent of the beatles with their soft pretty melodies and 3 part harmonies. But perhaps the albums emotional highpoint comes out in the edgey rock of "Nebulan 6" with Brewer''s voice calling out over a symphony of distorted guitar.
