Details:
Singer-songwriter Rhyne McCormick has spent the last few years playing, mostly cover songs, as an acoustic solo act in bars and taverns in the Mid-Atlantic states. Most singer-songwriters consider this an original artist "school of hard-knocks" (insert "play some Skynyrd!"). He saw it as an opportunity to learn what works and doesn''t work. He postponed studio time until he learned to write solid songs, sing them well and connect with his audience.
"I realize it''s not the usual approach to a recording career. But I have seen too many indie artists spend thousands of dollars on recording projects before they knew the first thing about writing songs. Most artists seem to be in a big hurry to get a recording contract and make a million bucks, even though they haven''t taken the time to learn the basics of the music business. That approach just doesn''t work."
So, McCormick gave himself an artist development deal. He took some guitar and vocal lessons, started playing cover gigs and learned how to connect with an audience. He sat down with accomplished songwriters and learned how to write and arrange songs. He then learned how to sing with all his heart and soul. "I found out quickly while playing cover songs in bars, if my heart isn''t in it, the audience will know."
This approach has worked well for McCormick, who has played over 1000 acoustic solo shows in the past few years. He covers a diverse range of artists such as Dwight Yoakam, Otis Redding, Edwin McCain, Melissa Etheridge, Johnny Cash and Neil Young. This wide range of influences can be heard all through McCormick''s new cd "Soul Dust"(released June 2005).
"I''ve been influenced by rock, country, soul and blues. These different styles seem intertwined to me, and they are all very American. So, I set out to make an Americana record that let all those influences be heard. Instead of focusing on trying to make the record fit into a certain genre box, I allowed the production of each song to take
its own direction. You can hear the rock, the country, the blues and the soul. They all work together in harmony to make a soulful American record."
When asked about his future music, McCormick doesn''t pull any punches. "Hey, this is a tough business and I still have plenty to accomplish. In the meantime, I''ll focus on promoting "Soul Dust" and continue building my grass roots initiative. I realize I don''t have all the time in the world, but I''m still young, have focus and believe in my music. I feel that if you''re true to yourself and your music, people will listen. Finding those people will be my focus with "Soul Dust". I believe it is the perfect vehicle to build a fan base and move on to the next level."
Catch Rhyne solo or with his band at a pub, tavern, festival or college near you. You will not be disappointed.
