What better place for a happen stance meeting than New York’s Greenwich Village. In Caffe Vivaldi, a small pub off Bleecker Street, one Sunday night in 2005 the paths of Uli Geissendoerfer and Premik Russell Tubbs crossed and their worlds of music touched.

“Worlds” is not an understatement as both come from backgrounds that cross the boundaries of ethnicities and tradition. Uli, from Germany, having studied in the US and Cuba played around the globe and holds an affinity for Latin, African music and Jazz and Premik, a native New Yorker and widely traveled himself, has been totally immersed in Indian culture for several decades. Their common ground is the synergy they experience when performing. It goes beyond sharing and deep respect of Eastern culture, thought and music. They complement their musical traditions. Breakdown Jazz, taking tunes, deconstructing, reassembling with lots of experimentation was the beginning. It would evolve and explode as other and more creative and eclectic souls were drawn into the fold.

The idea of a World music workshop came about. Every week they would invite several musicians for an exploration of styles from straight ahead Jazz to Sufi poets to Raga-based compositions, all could be heard and meshed into what eventually became Bangalore Breakdown.

So what began as an impromptu piano/sax duo evolved into this adventurous collective. Gino Sitson from Cameroon would offer his unique vocal styling, complemented by Swiss Jazz vocalist, Beat Kaestli, who would offer a more traditional Jazz approach, showcased in "Under My Skin (I''ve Got You)". Steve Sandberg, a renowned composer and master musician who has extensively studied Indian Ragas and added his vocal and synth work. Something new was happening, especially when all of them and more would show up on the same night! The stint came to a halt when four singers improvising at the top of their lungs seemed to push the boundary of the Caffe clientele a little too far. Thus the search for a new place and the want to document it led to downtown studio Gigantic. Here for two days in February of 2007 they recorded "Diary".

Looking for an organic sound different than the standard rhythm section, they enlisted Tabla young gun Dibyarka Chatterjee, as well as world percussionists Mathias Kunzli and Todd Isler. Bassist Nathan Peck a frequent traveler to the Balkans proved to be the perfect compliment for this unique ensemble. Finally Russian born Violist Lev ‘Ljova’ Zhurbin, having extensive background in Klezmer, classical and World Music lent his musical eloquence to the mix. Now with the release of "Diary", the journey is here for you to enjoy.
