The project for the band BENHUR was originally conceived in March of 2005 by Ben Nissan, who was at the time in the midst of completing a law degree. Interest from a record label inspired him to consider the possibility of making a living from his music, his life-long passion. Though he ended up turning down the deal he was offered, partly for the sake of focusing on his studies and completing his law degree, he eventually made the decision to pursue a career in music.
In September 2007, with a law degree in hand and a lucrative future in the legal world ahead of him, Ben turned his attention to forming a band. After setting up literally hundreds of meetings and auditions his patience finally paid off after finding award-wining and accomplished fellow musicians who shared his drive and vision, giving rise to the band BENHUR.
BENHUR has since played all over the city of Toronto including legendry venues such as Lees Palace, The Cameron House, and El Mocambo. The band has managed to produce a live sound that is melodically driven and emotionally charged. Their music has a unique yet familiar sound that has quickly gathered a following in the Greater Toronto Music Scene. The vocals are immediately captivating, and the complex dynamics and structure of the songs ensure that the music remains interesting to the listener long after the first listen.
With well over 200 songs under his belt, the lawyer-turned singer/songwriter fronting the band has set his sights high. In November 2008 the band releases their debut EP, Tryst. As well the band is planning a nation-wide tour, to be followed by a full length album release.
