Chicago vocalist, trumpeter and composer Jeannie Tanner has just released her new c.d. PROMISE ME THE MOON (Tanner Time Records, November, 2008).

Jeannie Tanner is an award winning composer, vocalist and trumpeter who performs and records with her band, the Jeannie Tanner Quartet. Tanner is a multi-instrumentalist, and among the few successful female trumpet players and jazz musicians in the world. Her music has been used for many TV/film projects, including Culinary Travels with Dave Eckert (PBS), and the 2006 indie feature film Reconstellation, which was entered in the Sundance Film Festival.

PROMISE ME THE MOON, Tanner''s fifth release, will remind listeners of the romantic music of the 1930’s and 40’s. The light, swing rhythm and charming lyrics of Tanner’s title track Promise me the Moon set the tone for this warm-hearted collection of love songs.

Twelve of the tracks are Tanner’s original J-Pop (Jazz-Pop) compositions, her signature blend of Jazz, Pop, R&B, Blues and Latin Rhythms. The result is a fresh, imaginative collection of sing-along tunes that tell stories of love and romance. There are two bonus tracks for listeners as well.

The 14 tracks flow seamlessly, engaging listeners with Tanner’s crystalline vocals and lyrical trumpet stylings. Her original melodies flow effortlessly over the music she wrote and recorded with her extraordinarily talented team of musicians.

From C’est Bon, C’est Bon, an upbeat tune with French lyrics and a Latin beat; to the dreamy My One True Love which smoothly slips and slides between 3/4, 5/8 and 6/8; to Three Wishes, a wild musical magic carpet ride, Tanner demonstrates her versatility as a songwriter, bandleader and performer, while effectively transporting listeners with tunes that are reminiscent of the sweet, popular music of the 1930s and 40s. Track four, Fred and Ginger is, in fact, Tanner’s tribute to Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers.

“The songs I wrote for PROMISE ME THE MOON remind me of the music of Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire, Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra - really all the multi-media stars of the 30s and 40s,” explains Tanner. “These artists performed and recorded music for radio, movies and stage. Their lyrics told a story. Their melodies were memorable. Their music had heart – it was filled with emotion – so the songs have timeless appeal.”

“Today, these songs are standards that people love to hear, like Summertime (1935), Night and Day (1942), Stormy Weather (1933), Just the Way You Look Tonight (1936), My Funny Valentine (1937), just to name a few. I’ve included Over the Rainbow (1939) on PROMISE ME THE MOON because it is one of my favorite songs of all time.”

“I’ve tried to infuse PROMISE ME THE MOON with all the emotion I felt as I composed each piece, and capture in the recording all the warmth, feeling and spontaneity our live performances.

Like TANNER TIME, her highly acclaimed 2007 release which was on the Grammy ballot voting list in nine categories, including Best Jazz Vocal, Tanner recorded PROMISE ME THE MOON with a “live” feel.

“The title track, Promise Me The Moon, is an unedited take,” recalls Tanner. “Three Wishes was not only a first take, it was the first time my quartet had actually performed the song together. I wrote it just days before we were scheduled to record.”

The variety of tunes on this c.d. showcase Tanner’s breadth and talent as a songwriter and musician. PROMISE ME THE MOON is lush, complex and organic with intricate time signatures and chord progressions that give her talented quartet room to stretch and move and explore the music. But Tanner’s distinguishing feat as a composer lies in her ability to fuse the spontaneity of old school jazz with memorable lyrics and musical hooks that give her music broad appeal.

Promise Me The Moon features genuinely inspired work by her quartet: Lisa McQueen, piano; Cory Biggerstaff, bass; and Darlene Dufay on drums; with special guest Neal Alger on guitar.
