Sophisticated music for unsophisticated minds. A collaboration between Beck, Bowie, and Lou Reed?

Rock Stardom was born Ryan Welch in Austin, Texas on August 27, 1971. Before his first birthday, his family moved to Northern Virginia where he spent the first part of his life. His musical education began at an early age, studying voice, piano, and later clarinet. From the beginning he enjoyed the spotlight, featured often as a soloist in church and school.

As a young teenager, the lure of sex and drugs led Ryan to buy his first cheap guitar and form his first Rock'n'Roll band, performing his music at parties, talent shows, and school functions. After about a year, he switched to electric bass, which became his main instrument for many years. As a bass player Ryan continued to lead a band throughout his high school years, as well as win awards with his high school jazz band and orchestra (on acoustic bass).

It was during his junior year of high school that a rather odd classmate began busting Ryan's balls and calling him "Mr. Rock Stardom" (a reference from an obscure 1978 Ron Howard film called "Cotton Candy"). The moniker caught on quickly, and before long (much to his chagrin) even his mother addressed him in this way.

After high school, Ryan attended Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond for a semester, studying acoustic bass. He was then accepted at The New England Conservatory in Boston for the following year as a classical composition major. In the interim he performed jazz in the D.C. area, where he was recognized by the Washington Post as one of the area's "up and coming" bassists.

At the New England Conservatory Ryan received a Bachelor's Degree in Music Composition, composing music for a wide variety of instruments and ensembles. He also performed with the chorus, chamber singers, and in jazz ensembles as well as with various rock bands in the Boston area. During summers in Virginia he performed and recorded with his trio Fearless.

After graduating in 1994, Ryan moved to Charlottesville, Virginia where he played bass on the college and bar circuit in a group led by Jamal Millner (Corey Harris, Dave Matthews Band). Until 1996, Ryan performed throughout Virginia, West Virginia, the Carolinas, Maryland and other neighboring states to large and small audiences.

In 1996 Ryan moved to New York City, where he was soon hired as a composer of commercial music. His music can be heard throughout the world on promos for Discovery Channel, Showtime, in advertisements and on the internet.

In New York, Ryan learned the skills of recording and producing while working with his band Fearless, on his solo material, and with Rock and Hip-Hop artists.

Forming Rock Stardom Music in 1999 with his wife Amy, Ryan continued composing and producing music, winning awards for his work in network and cable television.

In the summer of 2001 Rock Stardom Music relocated to Austin and Ryan turned thirty in the place of his birth. He immediately began seeking out musicians to perform the original songs he had produced over the years in New York.

With his back-up band the Fashion Jerks, Rock Stardom can be heard at clubs in the Austin area.
