Hailing from the mountains of Garrett County, Maryland, Richard and his wife Margie have spent the last 20 years making music and raising and homeschooling their two children. Originally from Annapolis, MD, they moved west to escape the rat race of the city in search of a quieter, simpler, way of life. In the early 1990''s they built a house on Backbone Mountain and decided to include a recording studio in the attic called "Backbone Christian Studios". Richard learned how to record and engineer his own compositions, including his first album "At The Master''s Feet", as well as projects for other local artists. As a singer/songwriter/musician, Richard has been influenced by artists like John Denver, James Taylor, and others who sing about love and relationships in a heartfelt, mature way.
When Richard was a teenager, he learned to play the guitar by listening to the Beatles Greatest Hits, which he won from a local radio station. He would practice for hours after school until he mastered his favorite song for that week. After high school Richard and Margie, having fallen in love and married, found that her violin and his guitar were as well suited together as they were. They began to sing and play together at home, in the car, and eventually at church and the local nursing homes.
Richard''s most recent album "Look Across the Years" is a musical journey that looks back upon childhood, deals with the joys and challenges of raising kids, and the importance of parents holding on to what brought them together in the first place. It is the second release of Richard and Margie''s record label "Backbone River Sound", the first being "With Warmest Regards" by "The Saint James Three", a local band from Oakland, MD.
