When his power-pop band, Large Wooden Matches, split, Bryan Paul Bell decided it was time to break away from the band dynamic and create something new. This EP is a powerful collection of roots-based rock that reflects his new direction.
The album opens with Dumb; a straight up "Y''all-ternative" track that gets your blood pumping and introduces the palette from which the rest of the cuts are painted. The up-front lyrics, distorted guitar and driving rhythm that pervade the EP are present from the first measure of this song.
Second up: Devil''s Gotta Dance. Written as a tribute to the spirit of the blues, this song holds nothing back. It tells the story of a well-meaning church goer who discovers his good intentions can''t save him from carnal needs.
With Sleep, an anthemic tale of procrastination, Bryan expresses the universal fear of doing anything that pushes against our comfort zones.
