I think of this collection as "Americana" in style and content. I''ve selected some of my favorite hymn tunes and attempted to give them a fresh flavor; one that I hope will encourage pianists to continue using these timeless melodies for years to come.
All of these arrangements have their feet firmly planted in gospel hymnody: those wonderful forthright hymns that have been ringing out in this country''s churches for decades. While the tunes draw from a wide variety of sources, the arranging is rooted in the style of the early American hymn tune, and I hope they stir your memories and spirit, as they do my own.
"Blessed Assurance" is one of more than 8,000 gospel song texts written by Fanny Crosby. Perhaps no other writer captured the essence of the American gospel hymn better than she. William B. Bradbury, another prolific American hymn-text writer, is represented with "Just As I Am" and "The Solid Rock."
Robert M. Stevenson, in Patterns of Protestant Church Music, said: "Gospel hymnody has been a plough digging up hardened surfaces of pavemented minds. Its very obviousness has been its strength. It is the music of the people."
