Flute Improvisations – Autumn Smiles was originally released in 1995 simply as Flute Improvisations and was well received at the time [see review excerpts below]. It was financed in part by a Jazz Fellowship from the PA Council on the Arts and the compositions reflect a wide range of emotions and life experiences. Listening to the opening cut, Autumn Smiles while traveling on a beautiful country road recently in October it was not hard to understand how music and title came to be associated – the subtly shifting chords and flowing melodic lines were in harmony with the colors and movements of the leaves and trees as I drove along. Autumn is also an important month for me as well - my wife and I were born, met [many years later, of course!] and married in that brief but special season.
And so it goes with each original selection on the CD – they were all connected to various aspects of my life at the time they were written and ultimately recorded [Simone is dedicated to my daughter who came into our lives only five years earlier]. I was very fortunate to have assembled the excellent players for the recording sessions as each had a very busy schedule at the time - assembling the same players now would be next to impossible - they’ve all gone on to spectacular careers and I encourage you to look each up on the internet. John Swana – Trumpet, Flugel Horn; Jim Ridl – Piano [except # 5]; Bob Gold – Piano [#5 only]; Darryl Hall – Bass and Butch Reed – Drums.
What some critics said about Flute Improvisations:
“…the beauty of his tone (an impressive achievement when you realize how thoughtfully he improvises on piccolo and alto flute) marks him as a talent to watch.” Norman Weinstein in the Boston Phoenix, August 1996.
“Adler displays his well-founded confidence by closing with a solo alto flute version of “’Round Midnight” that more than holds its own among the many recent renditions of the oft-played tune. A fitting ending to an enjoyable date.” David Dupont in Cadence, October 1996.
"A musical thread throughout the album is Adler''s individualistic approach to improvisation. His full rich tone and the use of special effects allow him to create an assortment of thoughtful and energetic solos." Curt Yeske in The Trenton Times, March 1996.
Flute Improvisations placed #6 in Temple University''s Jazz-FM WRTI, Top 10 New Releases for March 1996 of recordings in heavy rotation at that time.
Finally, a free download of a transcription of my solo in Autumn Smiles [first cut on the CD] is available from https://www.tradebit.com – go to the Flute Group.
Thank you for taking the time to read, listen and hopefully decide to purchase the CD.
