JAZZ: Weird Jazz, NEW AGE: New Age
Details:
Tellef got his first guitar at age 11 back in 1969. His first inspirations came from contemporary R&B and rock and roll. During the 1980s he contributed to several record releases covering musical styles from new wave rock to neo soul to electric jazz rock, as well as composing and performing music for 2 fringe theatre plays. Besides playing electric and acoustic guitars he created for himself a unique instrument from an electric Yamaha SG600. Removing the frets of the guitar and experimenting with string height and sound he arrived at a slightly distorted tone with a strong sustain. He used this guitar in concerts and on records, but, together with his other instruments; the electric fretless was put aside as he left music around 1990 for radio and newspaper journalism. His new EP "Some dodos never die" represents his return to actively playing his guitar again, this time uncompromisingly focusing on his own personal musical choices. Even if the record consists of improvisations over themes that have grown slowly during his less active period over the last ten years, some of the cuts are simply a result of what can come out of an inspired recording session when an instrument as expressive as the fretless Yamaha Sg600 is put in Tellefs hands and plugged into an amplifier. In the beginning of September Tellef played at the first NYC Fretless Guitar Festival, where also the double compilation CD "Village of the Unfretted", offering music from fretless guitarist of 17 different countries, was released.
