Levan Guinn was raised in the small rural town of Belle, Missouri. He has been playing guitar and writing songs since the age of 15. Levan received his first guitar for Christmas when he was 13 years old and for two years it sat in the corner gathering dust. At the age of 15 he decided he wanted to play the guitar, so he spent much of his time in his room with a Mel Bay “Learn to play the guitar” book. After he learned a few chords, he began to write his own songs. Whenever Levan had problems, or something was bothering him, he would go to his room and play the guitar and sing until all of his troubles didn’t seem so bad after all. His parent’s home was about 50 feet from the railroad track, so many of the first songs he wrote were about trains, or life along the railroad tracks. At the age of 17 Levan and some of his friends formed a band. They got their first gig in a bar in St. Louis. It was a rather rough place, but they became the house band for two years. After that, Levan met a lead guitar player named Rick Gehlert, who would become his life long friend. Together they formed a band and played throughout mid-Missouri for over 25 years. Levan and Rick are in a new band now and still play all over the mid-Missouri area. All of Levan’s songs have (at least) a grain of truth in them, but many are completely true. His songs are not created over a period of days through thoughtful contemplation, but instead seem to blurt out of his heart in a matter of minutes, complete with music and lyrics. He has always liked some of every type of music and has always had trouble trying to stick to just one genre. He likes country, bluegrass, rock, southern rock, Texas swing, alternative rock, rock ‘n roll, easy listening, pop, hard rock, and on, and on. This diversity in taste is common in a lot of baby boomers, as they have been part of many changes in the world. This is Levan’s first CD and is a collection of his best music and lyrics. The music in this compilation is heartfelt, mostly acoustic, and comes in the form of a country, bluegrass, folk, and rock mixture. The harmonies of Anita Ludwig, Rick Gehlert, and Stacey Smith help the listener feel the emotion in the songs and add to the sincerity and depth of the lyrics.
Levan likes to tell his friends he recorded this CD in his basement and it’s a big cellar.
