Even though the music business is just that----a business, one needs to have a little bit of fun with what they are doing. One listen to this CD, and you will find that this five-piece outfit from Massachusetts enjoys what they get to do. If nothing else, the disc is entertaining for its’ diverse mix of musical styles. There’s some Bluegrass overtones, which come into play on cuts like “Wages Of Sin,” but just as soon as you think you have the band pegged…..they turn in something that sounds like it could be a lost track from the vaults of Sun Records, like the pulsating “Carole Anne” or “Sittin’ Across From You.”
The musical bag of tricks doesn’t end there. There’s a 70s / CSN type sound to “Tell Me,” which has a nice sound, and the sing-along “Shovel That Coal” sounds like it could have been played alongside such 50s legends as Hank Williams and Carl Smith. One thing I personally liked about this disc is the fact that the musical arrangements are very fresh and entertaining throughout. Perhaps the best example of this is the free-wheeling “Big Barn Breakdown.” The vocals may be just a little bit unpolished here and there, but I don’t think they were going for perfection here. If you like to hear a band that has fun on Saturday night, who along the way makes you tap your feet, Lonesome Jukebox may very well be just for you! Try it, you just might like it!
