To fans of underground music Steve Mackay needs no introduction. He started his international career as a saxophonist with The Stooges and since then has played with other musical luminaries such as; The Violent Femmes, Smegma, Commander Cody and the Radon Collective (which he leads). A vibrant and explosive player, he continues to travel the world bringing his unique sound to a new generation.
Mike Watt is probably one of the most respected figures in underground music today. An original class member of the 1980''s U.S. hardcore scene, his career began with the minutemen and has swerved through a veritable who’s who of iconic bands as a band leader and a collaborator. These acts include The Secondmen, Firehose, dos, Porno for Pyros, Sonic Youth, J Mascis, The Stooges, Banyan, unknown instructors and many more. Constantly touring and recording, his legendary status is already guaranteed.
ESTEL are held in high regard in the Irish underground music scene. Already a decade old, they are seen as stalwarts of the Independent ethic sometimes lacking in today’s underground music scene. Over a career that has seen the release of four albums [with a fifth to be released in 2009] they have proven themselves again and again to be a world class band. They have toured Ireland and Europe extensively and have been a constant inspiration to upcoming artists in Ireland. The band are currently working on a soundtrack with cult Irish director John Mulvaney [Larva].
This album was recorded in a flurry of excitement when ESTEL were asked if they could make it happen by their friend Mike Watt. This is the fruits of their session. The album was made in the spirit of collaborations between older and newer artists. This is the first of two albums recorded by the aforementioned collaborators, the second was recorded recently and will be released in late 2009.
