''Claire Hayek has a vocal sound that is reminiscent of Cher without the gross vocoder fabrications that she adopted later in her career. Hayek has the same sort of dark timbre to her voice and is very distinctive and easy to recognize (once you know the voice)...''
'' If Only I is one of the gems of Intention. Stripped down to just guitar and voice, you can start to see the true potential of Claire Hayek...''
'' Just Another is a great soundtrack tune, probably for a nighttime teen drama or reality show...''
''Also worth a listen is What About (Mother), written with a baroque opening that opens up into Claire Hayek and piano. The song is pure theater and allows Claire Hayek to paint a very different picture with her voice. This is where you''ll decide that you have to buy absolutely anything the woman ever puts out...If you''re not convinced yet, then check out Redemption Song. You''ll weep.''
''Claire Hayek should be around for a long time to come. Talent like this never stays hidden.'' Review by Wildy''s World
Divided between love and deceit, hope and desperation, mystery and day to day reality, her debut album ‘Intention’ says it all. With the majority of the album written and produced by Claire, ‘Intention’ announces the arrival of a singer-songwriter-producer with an unbending purpose.
A war-child, Claire immigrated to Montreal, QC with her family in hope for a better future. She has come a long way since. A privately trained Singer-Songwriter, an Engineer, Singing Coach and recently Music Producer, the sky IS her limit.
Claire’s songs are reflections of personal experiences as well as inspirations from surrounding sources. ‘Baby Girl’ and ‘Empty’ are songs that she describes as being”…very personal yet they were inspired by a close friend. They touch on feelings we all have struggled or still struggle with such as fear of being-alone and self-image”.
She talks about love in ‘I don’t know’ and exudes a feeling of longing in our hearts with ‘If only I’. Conversely, she puts on her fighting gloves in ‘All means nothing’, a song that is co-written by Butterfly’s ex-band member, Paul Yates.
Elsewhere, she faces vanity and superficiality in ‘Charmer’ with its haunting middle-Eastern melodies and hypocrisy in ‘Peace of mind’ inspired by recent conflicts in the Middle-east. “Words cannot describe the pain I feel while watching the news and seeing innocent people die every day. I feel angry, helpless and sorry for humanity and where we’re heading”, she says. She consequently looks for answers about life’s purpose, Mother Earth protection and the future of humanity in ‘What about (Mother)’ with her voice crying out through lines such as:” what about the air we breath/all the pain we feel/ what about you and me/what about the green and the blue/all that we’ve been through/what about you and me/what about.”
Claire worked closely with her life partner, Montreal well-renowned Guitarist Rob MacDonald, when it was time to lay down some tracks. She recorded and produced the songs in their own home-based studio with Rob’s involvement as a Guitarist, Bass player, Recording and Editing Engineer. Claire''s team also includes Sam Harrisson (Drummer), Olivier Demers (Violinist- ''Vent du Nord''), Sheila Hannigan (Cello), Ian Benhamou (keyboards) and Denis Ducharme (Piano). Mixing was done by Rob Heaney who has shaped the sounds of artists such as Kevin Parent, Isabelle Boulay, Bet E & Stef and Cirque du Soleil. Mastering was done by Harris Newman of Greymarket Mastering (Arcade Fire, Vitaminsforyou, We Are Wolves).
‘Intention’ lures you into waves of deep emotions while stimulating your mind and conscience. It is definitely worth a listen!
