Unknown Boy, eh? Well, why not. At least somebody in LA is gutsy enough to give their band a name that brings to mind every Angeleno musician''s worst nightmare: Obscurity. Or maybe it''s Hunger.
Whatever the case, my slightly crazy friend Dave wanted me to go to The Joint on a Friday night a few months ago to see this weird rock-thing; he was raving about, and, trusting his taste for interesting music, I went along for the ride. This was where I met Unknown Boy. 30 minutes of none stop sonic rock that culminated with lead singer Adam Daniels being covered in tar and feathered by two vixens in angel costumes - one white-winged; one black. The last fuzzed-out chord of the set crunched as the feathers settled on a perplexed and howling audience. I can''t recall seeing anything quite like this before.
Band members Adam Daniels (vocals), Chad Gunderson (Guitars), Manuel Baldanza (Drums), and Isaac Laskin (Guitars), stewed up Unknown Boy 2 years ago with a mission to write gritty pop sensible songs that scramble the traditional mainstream, without loosing the hooks that make rock well, rock. Their recent, independently released, EP (recorded by Grammy award winner Kevin Valentine) has caught the attention of more than a few ears. Plastic Wings will be featured in the upcoming movie Feeding Grounds and on a new disc rumored to be The White Album; of independent compilation albums. Billboard DJ Greg Reeves remixed Plastic Wings and Spain is dancing to Jason Randolph''s remix of Pop - if they know the best clubs to go to. I can see why since I''ve gotten my hands on a copy (happy hunting, vinyl only). Not to mention that they''re probably four of the most captivating and charismatic people I''ve had a drink with in quite a while.
Having just pushed the envelope by doing a Playgirl shoot, the band is back in the studio working on a full-length album. Most of the new material is stuff we''ve worked out while on a heavy club schedule and gauging the audience feedback from some new snippets we''ve been throwing in the set, says Adam who moved to LA 7 years ago with high school pal Chad (Manuel''s from Switzerland and Isaac''s actually from LA), Working in the studio is always a new adventure and I think it''ll surprise even the fans who come out to see us regularly. They''ll be a few bonus tracks as well.
Unknown Boy is on the fast track to being this year''s hidden charm.
