Meet the Band
Rice Z.
Rice Z. is The Yiddish Invasion''s not-so-secret weapon. Aside from his duties as the band''s lead singer, Rice plays guitar, banjo, bass, keyboard, and jaw harp. A true jazz aficionado, he has also been known to blow a mean tenor sax. Rice writes and arranges all of The Yiddish Invasion''s music. He is responsible for programming the band''s electronic side. Rice engineers, mixes, and co-produces The Yiddish Invasion.
From 1996 to 2000 Rice was the recipient of the federal government''s coveted Endowment for Mad Science. He made great use of the grant, but eventually fell short of his goal: Rice was just six minutes away from ending world hunger when the Bush Administration pulled his funding.
"I was working around the clock," he says, "because I knew it was coming. One night they came in and started pulling plugs and overturning tables. I was saying, ''Wait a minute! I''ve got a grant.'' They said, ''Not anymore, science boy. We need that money so we can kill people.'' They told me ''altruism is for suckers.'' It was really a tough break."
Shortly thereafter, Rice built a recording studio within running distance of a hospital, and devoted himself fulltime to music. He captured the world''s imagination with his 2001 release Concerto for Didgeridooist and Yodeler, which gained him a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. He lost narrowly to Shelby Lynne, whoever that is.
Known to his fanáticos hispános as Arroz Zeta, Rice Z. has nearly one hundred credits as a producer and performer for the Me Duele La Cabeza record label.
During the summer Rice teaches a master class at the University of New Hampshire. His course is 057ə82-Advanced Techniques in Radio-Controlled Car Maintenance for Guitarists. Check your catalogue for days and times.
Sveten V.
Between deportations Sveten V. plays bass in The Yiddish Invasion. His musical conscience, groove, and sense of style make him a perennial fan favorite.
Sveten hails from Shresneskosiva, a tiny republic of the former Soviet Union. His skills as a bassist, singer, and songwriter keep him in demand in his hometown of Günshovel, population 7,377.
Also an accomplished visual artist, Sveten has sold his handcrafted Rorschach tests to collectors, galleries, and mental institutions throughout the world. Of his work Sveten says, "All designs are based on fundamental belief the Rorschach must look like pair of boobs."
When in the States, Sveten enjoys wandering around the New England wilderness, testing his skills as a survivalist.
Sveten wants it known that he only keeps his beard for tax purposes.
Sid West
Sid West plays drums, percussion, and corn husks in The Yiddish Invasion. He records certain voices, which should be differentiated from vocals, as he is no kind of singer. Sid writes all of The Yiddish Invasion''s lyrics. He is also the band''s co-producer.
In his time away from The Yiddish Invasion, Sid is the editor of Insomniac Runner, a magazine dedicated to advancing the concerns of conspiracy theorists, technophobes, and, of course, insomniac runners.
Sid is currently working on a four-dimensional manuscript, which is purported to exist in multiple temporal manifestations in the same instance. The working title of the book is Why Are Teenaged Girls So Fat?
In a recent interview, Sid told Sandwich Maven magazine, "I have moved eighteen times in the last eight years, and it''s all because I hate mayonnaise."
Sid enjoys baseball, radio, and ceiling fans.
