"It''s not just something I do- it''s something I feel. It''s a passion. We are all given gifts to share with the world, and I know this was what I have been given".

Asha has felt this way about her music since she first picked up a guitar at age 12. The Kamloops singer/songwriter used the instrument the way other girls her age kept diaries. Writing songs brought her solace and kept her connected to others.

"My songs have always been about my own life, or about the people I care most about," says Asha.

Now, at 23, and with three demo projects under her belt, Asha is ready to step up in the music world. In May 2004, Asha recorded her first full length album, Livin'' Here.

Livin'' Here emerged from months of living in Vancouver and is a reflection of how life changed for Asha in the city, and her musical influences along with it. Asha was drawn to an indie rock sound, with funk and blues thrown into the mix, rather than pop. Asha''s newly evolved sound is inspired by artists like Tegan and Sarah, and Emm Gryner.

Asha decided to produce this project herself, with fellow musician Kris Ruston. Kris, owner of independent record label, Bestest Records, engineered and mixed the album. The disc contains seven songs, showing diverse elements of rock, pop, and even a bit of jazz. The jazz influence was new for Asha, a direction she took with help from Kris, who studies jazz at Capillano College in Vancouver. The artwork on the C.D was done by Eyeteasers in Vancouver, the same company who created cover art for Bif Naked.

Asha recorded her first three-song demo when she was 17, with help from fellow artist Terra Grimard. The demo was recorded for Shania Twain, with whom Asha sang on stage after winning a singing contest. "I wanted something to give to Shania, something she could maybe pass on to somebody in the business," says Asha.

At 20, Asha''s next step was to record four songs at Small World Studios in Kamloops. She found the studio experience amazing, but her influences soon began to change, and she realized her songwriting style was evolving. "It didn''t feel right selling the demo I had recorded at the studio because it wasn''t representing the music I was now playing," Asha explains. "It didn''t represent me. My style was changing from pop to a more indie rock." That''s when Asha decided to take things into her own hands, and record Livin'' Here on her own terms.

Asha has grown confident from all of her hometown support, including two radio stations who play her music, T.V interviews, newspaper promotions, and local performances. She has started over fresh in Vancouver, where she has now been living for almost a year.

"It''s hard starting over from scratch, but it was time to make my music heard elsewhere. I was in need for a serious transition".

Asha will return to Kamloops on August 26th for the C.D.''s debut. The C.D release party will be held at Rota''s Pub, free of charge, at 8pm. Asha also plans to tour B.C. and Alberta this fall and winter to promote the album so stay tuned for details.
