CINCO DE MAYO
Buenos Dias, thanks for listening to tracks from my latest CD which continues the progression started on my last CD ''Eyewitness'' from smooth guitar to the incorporation of a few more rocky elements and heaven forbid some backing vocals. This reflects my listening trends, which vary between smooth / rock guitar depending on my mood. So here you can have both, or maybe I''ll just fall between two stools (not for the first time). I''ve always enjoyed reading notes about tracks saying why they were written, what they have been inspired by etc etc etc. Some of these such as ''In Rock'' by Deep Purple I can still recall i.e. Bloodsucker-''A particularly nasty sort of fellow, there are lots of us''. Some, such as Joe Satriani''s Anthology give you an insight to the songs formation, whilst others such as Steve Vai''s Real Illusions are just, well, weird. So, consequently I decided to jot down a few notes about the tracks on this CD, but being a simple northerner I''ll keep them err, simple.
CINCO DE MAYO-I started recording this on the 5th May, hence the title. This was a tune I wrote originally for my son''s music course. Actually the guitar solo on his version whips my ass, kids eh. This is a simple 12 bar in Dm and is one of a few of my songs I play live with the band ''Eclipse''. The song features Kerry in the intro on vocals and also John on sax.
MY HEART-I wrote this as a full song, but this version features guitar verses and Kerry on the chorus. Again the nice sounding ''sound of music type'' words are really venom and vitriol in disguise and are not based on a real person. Absolutely not, no way, no.
CAYO HUESO -Inspired by a holiday in Key West in early 2005 via the god fearing everglades. I came back with the melody and chords for this song fully formed in my head with what I thought would be a Hispanic groove. But no, by the time the track was completed these had all but evaporated and the track had taken on its own somewhat funky and rocky tendencies. I start the guitar solo on this with some pinched harmonics in the vein of guitarist Neil Zaza, who I''m listening too a lot at the moment. Check him out on the web he''s fantastic.
IT''S TOO LATE-This song was inspired by an episode of ''Without a Trace'' which I thought was the best thing on TV last year. I thought this track would suit the end sequence they had in a number of episodes, but it would have to go some to beat Tim Buckleys ''Hallelujah'', which ended the first series. The solo starts on the nylon strung then moves over to the electric. Oh really I can hear you saying, how interesting, tell me more. It could be worse, you could be sat next to me in a bar discussing obscure 70''s rock bands (Nutz and Strife anyone?), funk bands (Slave and Breakwater?) or comparing the relative merits of Ritchie Blackmore Vs Tommy Bolin or Louis Johnson Vs Larry Graham.
ALL I NEED-Recorded and released on ''Big Trouble'' the original was a full song with my vocals! -you''re lucky you''re not listening to that. This version features the chorus sung by Kerry with the verse melody on guitar. The song is a tale of obsession, just choose your poison. It''s not remotely autobiographical, oh no. Those pinched harmonics creep into this one again.
OBJECT OF DARK DESIRE- I added the dark bit in the title because the solo in this reminds me a bit of Dave Gilmour = Pink Floyd=Dark Side of The Moon, simple really. Another slowish one, 65 beats per minute, it wouldn''t do for the Ibiza crew.
WOULD YOU BE THERE? - Probably if the money was right. As well as the vocal phrase this features some melody playing in octaves on the verse a la Wes. The outro solo was added as a one-take afterthought on this, but now it''s my favourite bit, particularly the tapping. This is played on my Ibanez (You''d think they''d give me one for free after all this plugging, alas no)
COME TO ME-Another slowish one, the chorus theme was written to use on a song with ''Eclipse'' but never actually made it.
MOCKINGBIRD-95 bpm, a mid tempo rocky number. This tune was languishing on ''death row'' for some time and only made the cut at the last minute. Four more tunes recorded for the CD weren''t so lucky and are destined to a life of obscurity unless they rise Lazarus like to feature on a future CD.
HEAVEN - Now, this again features vocal snippets from Kerry (occasional star of Coronation Street and the band I gig with ''Eclipse'') on vocals. She sings ''Heaven'', but there are no prizes for guessing that. This was abstracted from another song we had recorded but can you guess what song? This has a bit of rocky guitar in it and some wah wah, which I never used to use but has now started creeping insidiously into a few things.
IS THIS THE END? -Err, No - there are still five tunes to go.
CHILDREN OF GOD-Nothing to do with my Christian Brothers carrot and stick (without the carrot) approach to education, in fact not remotely connected with him or her upstairs. The only link is the repeated sampled ''children of god '' phrase at the end courtesy of Samplenet. The ''Aaahs'' on the lead up to the chorus are Kerry.
IT''S NO SONG AND DANCE-Oh yes it is, midtempo Latin type groove thing with sampled vocals. In parts the guitar solo edges perilously close to Carlos territory, but surely that''s no bad thing.
THE NIGHT (YOU CALLED IT A DAY)- I had the title before the song. I''ve always liked the juxtaposition (hang on northerners don''t use words like that do they) of opposites in titles, i.e. a hard days night etc. There''s probably a word in the dictionary that describes this kind of phrase, I''m sure it was on ''Call My Bluff'' once.
ON THE NILE - The title is nothing to do with the River Nile, it''s actually referring to Nile Rogers guitarist from Chic. I thought the original chord progression had a ''Chicy'' (is that a real word?) feel, but if you listen the finished track is about as far away from ''Le Freak'' as you can get. Actually, the track does feature a shakuhachi in the background, which if you shut your eyes, smoke a few herbal cigarettes and hit the raki big style could get you in a vaguely ''Egyptian'' type mood. Then again maybe not....
SAME RAIN FALLS-You''ll probably be thinking that I''ll have the sound of rain falling at the start and end of this track, ha ha ha, how obvious. Well, you''d be right, I just couldn''t resist it. I like the solo in this one, although in hindsight some could say it goes on a bit, but not me obviously.
I also like to read which musicians'' artists have been influenced by so here''s a list of mine. Its pleasant to note that quite a number are newish which is because I''m still addicted to music (well some forms, I don''t really get C and W and lap steel guitars): - Andy Powell / Robin Trower / Michael Schenker / Ritchie Blackmore / Joe Satriani / Neil Zaza / Frank Marino / Stevie Ray Vaughan / Steve Vai / Peter White / Steve Oliver / Marc Antoine / Joyce Cooling / Craig Chaquico / Andy Timmons / Mattias Eklundh / Rob Balducci / Pat Travers / Jan Cyrka / Larry Carlton / Gary Moore / Paul Kossof / Ken Navarro / Leslie West / Carlos Santana / Mattias Eklundh / Neville marten / Larry Graham / Louis Johnson / Mark King / Stanley Clarke / Marcus Miller / Martin Turner / Verdaine White / Chris Squire / Andy Fraser / Steve Amazing (I wonder if that''s his real name) etc and lots more.
