AMANDA MABRO
A 28 year old Montrealer with Eqyptian, Greek, and Austrian roots, Amanda Mabro began her career as a performer at an early age working in film and theater. With the support of a business minded mother and artist father, she was given the opportunity to explore her artistic passions and whims at her own pace. At 17, she was offered a scholarship to the American Musical Dramatic Academy of Arts in New York City. However, when she was awarded a FACTOR demo grant, she decided to remain in Montreal to continue developing a newly forged musical partnership with her now long time collaborator Cozmos Quazar.
In the years that followed, Mabro took her astonishingly rich voice and, with producer/co-writer Cozmos Quazar, crafted a sound that fuses the smooth and sultry vocal stylings of jazz legends, the raw energy of indie-rock and blues, and the mysterious theatrical flare of German and French Cabaret. Her music embodies a fresh exuberance and intensity that jazz based music has seen too little of in the past three decades.
With the release of her critically acclaimed 2006 debut record Superwoman In The Making, Mabro popped off the map, wowing audiences with her high energy performances at venues and festivals across the country. Critics quickly took notice, writing reviews like "Mabro has molded a unique sound that''s steeped in tradition and topped with modern texture and sass" (Chartattack) and "Mabro''s music lives and breathes" (Montreal Mirror). The diverse line-up of her live show allows for the gripping subtlety and dynamism of the music to permeate even the toughest of crowds, leaving audiences breathless and satisfied.
Her most recent release Red Rows has been called "a groundbreaking piece of pop music" by CBC RADIO 1. Launched this past March, Red Rows has already resonated with Mabro''s fans and peers, inspiring comments like. "Cuts like the Bandish" "Better Day" and "Parlour" are a testament to her versatility. Her crystal like voice, soulful delivery, and raw passion make her a force to be reckoned with. Her cabaret stuff like "Nuit Blanche" on Red Rows coupled with the unique arrangements of her partner in song Cozmos Quazar allow Mabro''s unique voice to be heard all in a class by herself" (CBC Music Columnist, Duke Eatmon). The Montreal Gazette writes "her songs grab you by the throat and look you in the eye with cool defiance. This is big-voiced, cabaret-influenced music with a bit of garage attitude."
Enthusiasm for Amanda''s vocal prowess and ineffable presence continues to grow and has been heightened following the success of her performances at this year''s International Montreal Jazz Festival, Toronto Jazz Festival, and annual WAWA Show (a multi-disciplinary festival promoting women in the arts created and produced in Montreal by Mabro since 2003).
Mabro has also shared the stage with world renowned performers Celine Dion, Jorane, Luck Mervil, Les Respectables, and many more at the Montreal Bell Centre for an internationally televised charity event for the Red Cross. She has also shared the stage with many different Canadian and American artists including Vanessa Carlton, Raul Midon, Lullaby Baxter, Bob Egan, Franz Ferdinand, The Snitches, Elevator, and Arcade Fire.
Mabro''s current projects include the release of a second EP Wine Flows and a music video created and directed by Montreal concept artist Meinert Hansen for her first ever French language release "Nuit Blanche," and Mabro''s highly anticipated multimedia event "What''s your Pleasure?" set for the end of 2009.
