Details:
John Randall is a 25 year old drummer and composer from London with a band that features many of the rising stars of the UK jazz scene. Early last year drumming legend Clark Tracey heard Randall’s quintet perform in Birmingham and in his own words was “totally mesmerised.” He signed them to his record label TenToTen on the spot. The resulting album Insomnia (featuring special guest guitarist Phil Robson) was released in December and has gained wide critical acclaim, seeing it described variously as “infectiously edgy…impressive” (John Fordham, The Guardian), “bursting with musical ideas, rich, dexterous, vibrant and original” (Chris Parker, The Vortex) and “an extraordinary debut” (Downtown Music Gallery, New York). This critical recognition builds upon the numerous awards that Randall has won for his music in recent months, including the prestigious Peter Whittingham Jazz Award, a Yamaha Scholarship for Outstanding Young Jazz Musicians and The Dave Holland Jazz Ensemble Award.

Randall writes music of dramatic emotional contrasts, where a sub-bass rock out can resolve beautifully into a rubato ballad and complex ideas are made to sound melodic and memorable. His uncompromising compositional approach challenges – and at times completely ignores – the perceived boundaries between different musical genres and traditions and is rapidly building him a reputation as one of the UK’s most innovative young musicians. As Chris Parker of The Vortex Online wrote, “they don’t so much move easily between as totally disregard as irrelevant genres such as jazz/rock, hip hop and abstract electronic music; Randall simply has all these types of music in his emotional palette and uses them as required by the demands of his varied and intelligent writing.” This openness has led to his music finding fans from a huge range of different backgrounds, with high profile admirers ranging from jazz bassist Dave Holland to the dance producers Underworld.

Since the album’s release the quintet have played venues throughout the UK to fascinated and enthusiastic audiences, with their recent sell out show at Pizza Express Dean Street chosen as a “Pick of the Week” in The Guardian. The band features some of the most talented young musicians to graduate from the UK’s music colleges in recent years – Mike Fletcher (alto saxophone/flute), Chris Montague (guitar), George Fogel (keyboards) and Tom Farmer (bass).

Press quotes:

"The group often favour a staccato, avant-funky rhythm-pattern approach, suggestive of Tim Berne, David Binney or Bobby Previte .... the tightness of Randall''s drumming and the group''s rhythmic attack is impressive... Clark Tracey played a smart card in signing up this fast-blossoming talent.” (John Fordham, The Guardian)

“Infused with raw energy but refreshingly subtle and complex enough to reward repeated listenings. Recommended.” (Chris Parker, The Vortex)

“An extraordinary debut.....the band play high-flying, super-charged M-Base like, near-fusion groove....each piece has a theme that is hypnotic, sly and well-constructed.” (Downtown Music Gallery, New York)

“It’s fresh, it’s new and it challenges as well as pleases.” (Peter Bacon, Birmingham Post)

“Absorbing.” (The New Scotsman)

“Watch out for this group - led by John Randall - they’re already paving new ground with strong playing and fresh, individual compositions, that engage their audiences.” (Mike Gibbs)

“This band is going to be one of the trailblazers in young British jazz over the next ten years.” (Tony Dudley-Evans, Artistic Director of Cheltenham Jazz Festival and Birmingham Jazz)
