Details:
Mephisto Grande formed in Oxford in 2006. Liam Ings-Reeves and Pete Ward had been discussing traditional gospel, old school blues and big band Jazz. The music of Mephisto Grande was initially born from the desire to take elements from these things and combine them with heavy distorted guitar.

“Mephisto Grande have created something new and they do it very very well!”

After gigging as a two piece for a year or so Phil Oakley joined the band on bass.
Further down the line John Bosley offered his services as a percussionist, and after meeting saxophonist/clarinettist Zac Gvirtzman busking in Oxford the line up was complete.

“What to say about this Mephisto Grande set? Put it this way, we offered them a Nightshift front cover feature the moment they left the stage…if you can imagine Tom Waits, The Magic Band intoxicating The Birthday Party at a Baptist gathering in a Parisian free jazz café, fronted by a man with a voice like rough diamonds being dragged over hot coals, you can get one hundredth of their wayward glory.”
Nightshift

Mephisto Grande’s debut album, ‘Seahorse vs the shrew’ was completed in Februray 2009 and released independently in March.

“This is a pretty stunning and pretty mindbending album, showing Mephisto Grande to be forging a unique path for themselves and seemingly paying little or no attention to trends, outsider thought or the normal way of doing things.”

“A captivating sound that crosses both generational and stylistic boundaries.”
