Christian folk music evokes songs like Kumbaya and Michael Row the Boat Ashore etc. But what if longtime folkies like Lightfoot and Tyson had infused their melodic tunes with a good dose of evangelical Christianity? What would that sound like? That’s the question Joe Kelly has been answering for over 20 years since being born again in the mid 80s.
. After being influenced by these and other “folk survivors”, Joe has been melding the Christian message of hope and salvation with folk and Americana’s feel of the land and lonely places.
Joe became a janitor in a large department store in West Michigan in 1990, since musicians are notoriously unable to afford medical benefits. The added benefits in 15 years, were some good friends and nearly 100 songs. Finally in 2008, the generosity of a friend enabled him to finish his debut CD, Child of the Mountains, volume 1 of the janitorial years. He sang and played a variety of stringed instruments, using them as a painter mixes his colors. The cover art is his as well; the music inspiring the art and vice-versa. One ambient song ,”Winter” features 5 of his advanced guitar students. Joe has taught and played since the 60s. The result is a unique bend of faith and the sounds of yesteryear, so impressively delivered by the likes of Denver, Stewart, Tyson, Lightfoot, et al.
Joe’s music continues to evolve and he’s excited about the new songs written after the janitorial experience, now that he’s back to full time schedule of instruction and performing.
