Georgie Raggett is 19 years old and has been writing music for about 6 years. She plays classical music on the piano, flute and bassoon but has been improvising from a young age and plays the piano and sings on all of her tracks. The first time Georgie recorded her own songs was in 2005 with some friends, but having contacted a producer in 2006, she then recorded a CD consisting of 4 tracks to a more professional standard.
The second track on the album , ‘The Terror of Beslan’, was inspired by the horrific events that occurred on September 1st 2004, when the world was bombarded with images and articles of the terrorist attack on School Number One in Beslan, Russia. Aged 15, Georgie read the numerous articles, one of which is described in the song. Here are extracts from the article, published in The Observer on Sunday September 5, 2004. For hundreds of pupils at Beslan''s Middle School Number One, it was to have been a celebration of the first day of the new school term. Parents carried flowers and teachers wore their best clothes.
While his friends were lining up, Soslan Bigayev, 13, had been wandering around the school looking at the renovation work that had been done. Thirsty, he headed for a water fountain.
Meanwhile, some of the older children noticed them first - a masked group quickly crossing the railway tracks that run behind the school. Caught between gunmen coming from two sides, an estimated 1,000 children, teachers and parents were herded at gunpoint into the gym, a new building about 10 metres wide and 25 metres long.
''I thank God that I became thirsty. It saved my life.'' While he was drinking, the second group drove into the school.
