"From Roots To Clouds" is a raw, natural and honnest sounding record that might send shiver down your spin. The performance here is intense.
The 5 songs EP starts with a track that could be described as a mix of Sarah McLachlan''s "Angel" and Norah Jones''s warm and sensual voice. The production here and on most of the record is really minimalist, featuring only the piano work of Mathieu Fiset, and the voice of Hind Fazazi, without any overdubs or studio editing.
The next song, "Eternal Morning Light", is perhaps the one that fit the most with the "DARK Pop Music" label. This is a beautifull piece that could be compared to the work of Steven Wilson in his Blackfield project. Very simple music, yet touching performance.
Then we have an acoustic version of the song "Biharou Tofoulati", wich was on the first Manahil album "Hadayane". Featuring arabian lyrics and subtle oriental melodies, this add some exoticness to the EP.
The last two songs are the darkest of them all. "Where It Ends" is a deep and emotional piece of work influenced by composer Ryuichi Sakamoto and "To Anger" is the most grandiose track on the record; It all starts with a noisy intro in the vein of Nine Inch Nails, then evolve into a drums driven, majestic rock anthem that ends with a brutal clash of dissonant piano chords.
With the warm, deep and sensual voice of Hind Fazazi, the intense and unconventional piano work of Mathieu Fiset, "From Roots To Clouds" is really an acoustic record that stands out of the standard piano/vocal formula. A recommended listen if you look for something new !
