An Affair of Poetry, Music and Deep Soul

Master Storyteller. Wordsmith. A Modern-Day Psalmist. An interpreter of music from the deepest depths of the soul, Tavis Bohlinger is the man with a voice as big as his heart, who has brought poetry back to life. The 31-year old Los Angeles based singer-songwriter has walked a long, arduous journey to be where he is, in life and in his music. And has it been worth it? Just one listen to his long-awaited, self-titled EP “Tavis Bohlinger” proves that every mile traveled, every heartache weathered, every struggle conquered has been well worth it. Because the result is an offering that comes like a sweet breath of fresh air, and a far cry from the production-enhanced, packaged and repackaged lyrics that are a trademark of today’s contemporary music offerings.

The release of this EP marks the end of many grueling years for Tavis, fighting his way into every possible venue in Southern California, and some in the Northwest and as far as Brazil; flirting with high-profile sponsors such as Quiksilver and O’Neill, yet embracing lesser-known ones such as Discover the Journey and Gospel for Asia. He has emerged like a phoenix rising from the ashes of his previous attempts and indeed from the state of the current music scene. But more than anything else, the release of his EP heralds a new Renaissance in music: that of a successful affair between poetry, music and deeply soulful emotion.

The genre of his style of music can be best described as acoustic/folk. However, those words don’t seem enough to describe the depth of meaning his songs convey, spiritual and emotional. They also don’t take into account his unmistakable signature approach to the guitar, employing finger-picking, strumming, and alternate tunings in a pleasantly surprising new approach that is nevertheless grounded in solid technique. Imagine music theory kissing emotion and you get an idea of where he’s going to take you.

There is a quality of sparse yet bone-chilling storytelling about his lyrics, delivered through his earnest, soulful voice. In the tradition of the great folk artistes, he gives life to the experiences that have made him who he is. From the track “God is Enough”, a song that describes him grasping for hope through the travails of a rushed marriage, to “The Tempest”, which was written haphazardly as an expose of the hypocrisy that pervades every aspect of modern society. Other songs such as “Sunsets” broach the familiar theme of lost love, yet he manages to upend the typical formula to suit his inimitable voice and style with the beautiful result of abstract simplicity.

Tavis Bohlinger’s uniqueness shines forth in the EP’s straightforward, bare-bones production, employing in all but two tracks only his haunting voice and distinct finger-picking guitar playing. The project which began simply as a desire to offer a small collection of his favorite songs to be savored on road trips and sunset-watching evenings, has accomplished far more than that: it sets a new standard, maybe a new genre even, with its intense expression of soul-bearing musical brevity and lyrical candor.
